Just got back from shooting for first time(SKS)

So just got back from shooting my new SKS for the first time, was also my first time shooting a semi auto of any kind, had only fired a few rounds(less than 50) from various bolt guns all scoped up till today. So total newbie really.

Fired 220 rounds from it(Czech surplus FMJ, corrosive) could hit pop can 2/3 times at 25 yards by time i left. could hit 4 gallon milk jug at 50 yards every other shot. Didn't try further yet. So obviously i have much room for improvement. Was shooting standing only, no rest. Never missed anything by more than a foot so i guess thats a start right? lol

Initial impressions are:

1. Most fun i have had with my clothes on
2. Lighter recoil than expected
3. I hate the 5 round mag limit
3. My SKS is for now more accurate than i am
4. The iron sights are alright at best, looking into better options now, but they are straight and dont need adjustment, gun shoots straight if i do my part but i think better sights would help.
5. Took me 3 hours to strip and clean cosmo off, only 1 hour to strip and clean after shooting, hoping to get it down to 45 min next time.
6. Trigger group gets way dirtier than expected after shooting, like wow dirty.....
7. Whole gun gets dirtier than expected, wasnt expecting that much carbon build up, was black from elbows down to hands after cleaning it.(does using non corrosive help with this?)
8. Only had one failure to feed, 3rd round from mag didnt feed once, had to pull charge handle and fed fine then, dont know what happened but was in the middle of the shooting trip so fired many rounds after and before no issues.
9. I cant figure out how to use the stripper clips to feed it, im an idiot i know, manually fed it from top with bolt open all day one round at a time into mag.
10. Gun powder smells weird, and seems to make me have a weird taste in my mouth.
11. SKS chucks cases really high into the air lol
12. Bullets make nice sparks show when they hit certain rocks
13. Shooting in the pissing rain kinda sucks, but was still most fun ive had in a long time. And rain didnt effect operation of SKS at all and it was dripping wet all day.
14. Its not hard to fire fast enough to get the barrel rather warm/hot/steaming.

Thats it for now, just need to save up cash for gas so i can go shooting again now, still have lots of ammo :) Sorry for no pics was to busy shooting.
 
They are a lot of fun to shoot, when you clean it pay attention to the gas tube & piston, they will rust easily if you are not thorough.
To use the stripper clips put the loaded clip into the slot on on top of the receiver and push down on the cartridges, sometimes you have to wiggle them a bit but they should all go down easily with a bit of downward pressure.

Do you think the gun being dripping wet the whole time would make it dirtier faster? Maybe the water made it easier for the carbon to stick to everything.

go to gunsprings.com and order the wolff sks spring pack. Makes a much better trigger pull, and more accurate rifle. Trigger pull on these is atrocious.. but they as fun as hell.

Sights do stink (that shallow notch rear sight esp..)
 
Try less oil, I only oil heavily if it's sitting in the safe for long periods. Otherwise just a light film will do, I run a dry patch through the bore the night before I plan to go shooting to get rid of any excess.
 
Possibly, that was something that crossed my mind when I read your post. Could also simply be you have some more corrosive than average ammo. I got a case of Chinese and it doesn't seem to be as bad as you are describing. Still, I am switching to a non corrosive crate next time, price isn't much more. I have also heard that the new "non-corrosive" ammo should really be listed as "Less corrosive" and you still need to clean your SKS maybe not every time but still more than average. Doesn't bother me much tho.

Yeah I think I will clean it everytime I shoot it corrosive or not. I'm confident that with time and practice I can get it down to taking me only 20-30 min.
