Been wanting one for a couple of years now. Missed out on some deals and couldn't follow through on some others. This is my second pistol ever. I sold the first one I bought because I didn't want a DA/SA but I bought one because I could.

Took me 2 months to sell it after the guy said "I'll take it" because of CFO shenanigans. Which led me to miss out on a cheaper FEG and another Item I saw at the local gun show.

In the end. I found something a bit unique, and despite my earlier misgivings about buying a .40 rather than a 9mm. I pulled the trigger and bought it.

According to the serial number it is a '95.

Currently has a mangled Pachmayr grip on it which I intend to change, and it desperately needs the newer style safety lever. I don't care so much about it being ambidextrous, as I do about it not cutting up my hand when I try to rack the slide.

Any tips for a first timer? I marvel at the fact that some of my buddies are saving up for their top of the line 1911 they want so bad and it's going to cost them more than any car I've ever bought. And I picked up this genuine piece, already top of the line (despite needing a bit of TLC) for 6 and a half bones.

I'm in love.

That's one nice HP!!!

Let us know how it shoots.

Love mine but hate the super glossy finish on it. Every scratch shows.

My first handgun was a 1976 Hi Power. Those grips were de rigeur back in the day. You won't find many parts for these guns without looking hard. So don't be too quick to swap things out. On mine, I filed the thumb rest off so the two sides are almost flat. I've never liked a gun that forced my hand into a particular position.

Yours has a better backsight than most of what left the Browning plant. Mine came with a sheet metal jobbie with two tiny fine threaded cone head screws, whose main purpose in life was to come loose and jump into the sand/grass on the range.

It's designed by JMB ( mostly), it's a HiPower, one of the iconic guns of the 20th century, used by a ton of military all over the world and it's broken in! Nothing you need to worry about! Clean, lube and shoot!
Congrats on your good taste!
The only thing that could look better IMO is the MkIII two tone Practical. It has the Commander hammer and the 2 tone is just ###y!

I'm in love.

BHP's are great HG's! You're buddies probably aren't aware that JMB designed the BHP as an improvement to the 1911:)
Mine's a 1968 "T" series with the same Pac grip. The slide feels like its on ball-bearings. One of my Never-Sells.
BTW….Google Mag disconnect.

Love my BHP, bought gently used, from an estate, 1993 Capitan series with tangent sites, beautiful blue finish, it is my never sell handgun

I love my Hi-Powers...I have three and can never have enough of them...How many Hi-Powers do you need...Just one more....

Why - what a FINE pistol! In my scholarly opinion this is one of the few guns that the 9mm SHOULD be chambered in.

Question though Advoc - you don't like the Pachmyer grips? I remember a long time ago when only the cool kids had them. I think they look great...

I do like the pachmayr, it's just been mangled. you can see from the one picture, whoever installed them carved out the thumbrest on the left side.

The sights are Novaks, so they're aftermarket. It didn't come with the originals, but he also included a set of fiber optic sights that I may check out some day.

It's such a different beast than the tactical tupperware offerings. And it has a lot more class imho.

The safety has to change though. Combining the higher recoil spring for the .40 and a murderous hammer spring... you really have to reef on the slide on a lowered hammer, and that safety with it's little spur sticking out just shreds the thumb meat on my left palm. It hurts.

There is actually a brand new MKIII and Standard at the local Wholesale Sports, and contrary to what I thought, I actually prefer the grips on the mkIII. I wouldn't mind getting a set to go with a new pachmayr so I can play around with them a bit.

I'm glad the consensus is you've gotta have good taste to own one :)

All the information you ever wanted to know about the browning hipower.

Written by Stephen Camp. A solid dude.

The recoil spring in the 40 can be a challenge for reassembly. I have a practical in 40. Had the cylinder and slide sear and hammer kit installed. The trigger is much better. The long trigger reset compared to the 1911 catches me up sometimes.
Reliability is far better than any 1911 I have owned.
Definitely on the never sell list.
