Hi guys, original plan was to get a ruger 22/45 as I intend to get a real 1911 at some point, and the ruger would get me used to the grip and be cheap to shoot.

But with .22lr ammo becoming so hard to come by and expensive im thinking of skipping the .22LR and going straight to the real 1911.

Thoughts?

Also ive been told the Norinco 1911's are exact clones of colt so can be easily built up with aftermarket parts unlike some other 1911 clones that don't follow the original design, is this correct?

If price of ammo isn't much of a factor, I would say pick up a Norinco and blast away. I have one of the government models and it definitely looks the part. Shoots like a dream, too.

I started off with a STI Trojan and TargetMaster, and added a 22/45 SS Bull barrel for fun and cheap practice. Got addicted to making tiny groups and now have 4 22/45's in different configurations (fiber optic sights, red dot, TacSol 6" barrel, ....), Still shoot and enjoy the STI's, but find the 22/45's just as rewarding and fun, and CHEAP to shoot :)

Buying a .22 pistol is like buying a base model car, after a short while you'll crave more options and power.

You should be able to find a brick or two of .22LR in your area, enough to get you started.
Consider the GSG 1911-22 as a started. I've had both the Ruger 22/45RP and the GSG, and prefer the GSG.
I'd definitely start with the .22 before going to the .45.
My $299.99 Norinco 1911 from CanadaAmmo fits the Kimber conversion kit and other 1911 parts I have tried.

.22 is out there. You just need to keep checking and buy when you find it. The prices will come down eventually sooner or later. Sooner if the US gets a gun friendly president and the public calms down and stops panic buying ammo and later if they get an Obama like follow on.

You will wan't and get both...don't fight it, just accept it lol.

So true. ;)

I went out to range yesterday with the intention of shooting 9mm but the club just got a Beretta model 71, I am glad that I brought some 22lr as i shot it for about two hours, great time,
save up and get them both you wont regret it.

.22 Don't fret about it, just get it. You will always be buying and selling centerfires but a good .22 will serve you for the rest of your life. Either you will shoot it a lot or you will use it to introduce new shooters to the sport. Nothing as gratifying as spending the day teaching your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren how to shoot with that unstoppable .22. Just do it.

.22's are always going up and down in price because too many people hoard ammo, but they're not really hard to come by, you just have to make some calls or go visit local shops. But even if prices go up it's still a lot cheaper than shooting .45

You should absolutely get a .22, everyone should have at least one. The 22/45 is nice, just make sure you get one with removable grips.

Get a 22 pistol and put at least 2,000 rounds through it before you move to a bigger caliber.

22 ammo about $0.10/round
45 ammo about $0.60/round

Not only will you save money on ammo, but you will develop better as shooter.

I have a beauty model 71 Beretta in original prohib length, and the truth is that a brick of ammo will probably last the rest of my life. It's a really nice gun, but 22lr just doesn't do anything for me. I have 2, 22 rifles that I haven't put a round thru in about 3 years. Whenever I take them out it just seems to be lunchbag letdown

I enjoy shooting my MKIII Standard for about 100rnds…..more if someone loads the PITA mags for me(I have wimpy computer fingers).
Then the Big Guns come out…..
