Yeah, the $400 budget sure does hamper things. Satrap, you gotta buy what you want but do make the effort to check out the options. I've seen and handled the Mossberg and some of the plastic aftermarket stocks on the Ruger 10/22's. Most of them seemed a little floppy and less than durable feeling to me. You certainly get "The AR Look" with them but too often it's just skin deep. Me? I'd far rather have the gun feels well made when I snap home a magazine and which feel solid and does not creak. I kid you not. I've been at the line as an RO with the guy shooting one of the plastic stock AR like rimfires where it CREAKED when he put the magazine in place and wiggled it to check the seating. So be sure of what you want.

I can see why you would want something more than a basic wood stock. But there's lots of options for nice looking and nice feeling stocks that don't happen to look all AR like. Look them over and be sure of what you want and what you'll enjoy over the long term.

My Ruger " want to be AR " shoots as well as my Rem 597 20 in HB at 100 yards , yes for $300.00 and change the Rem 597 HB is an excellent rifle and shooter .

The 715T .................................... Not !

Project guns are just that , a project to build something different , better , improved over the original version , it's not an issue of cost , it is an issue of affordability .

High grade Replacement barrels , trigger groups , bolts ect for the 10-22 are not cheep but done correctly can really push the reliability and accuracy to a new level over a stock version .

Yes my AR want to be is now a high value rifle , is it for everyone one , No that's for sure but I built it for me like many of my other rifles .

If gentleman wants a low cost good shooting 22 cal rifle , there are many to chose from , Savage , Remington just to name a few .

I wish him best of luck in finding what " He " likes and will enjoy shooting !!!!
 
Satrap, I understand this is a little over your stated budget, but I'm surprised no one mentioned the ISSC Mk22. The first generation (pre-2013?) had issues, but they seems to be all fixed now.

Please tell us the retail price of these mags. The rifles weight. Also how is takedown?
Its get to offer another option but be fair and tell the whole story.
Maybe thats why no one has listed it.

Suther: Sorry, but Mossberg made a pistol that used the same mag as the 715T and fouled up the deal for us Canadians: it's 10 rounds now, the old 25-rounds are verboten.

Satrap; the tall order is that you requested "Tacticool" + "Accurate" + "Cheap to buy" + "Cheap to shoot". It's understandable... but not really possible. The first two factors are not very compatible with the last two. Here's another possible suggestion, and again it will run you over that $400 you mentioned: a Ruger 10/22 tricked our with an Arkangel Nomad stock kit. Of course, the owner added a different flash hider, and this build begs for some kind of optics, so again it comes to how many $$$ the look is worth to you. I believe the kit is about $220, but don't quote me on that.

Little_Airwolf: Since you were too lazy to look up the information, here's what you asked for:

1. Magazines: The ISSC Mk22 rifle comes with one 22 rnds mag. They're US$30 at http://www.cdnnsports.com/magazines/issc-mk22-22lr-22rd-black-factory-rifle-mag.html. That's just the first link I checked, I am certain you'll find higher prices, and perhaps lower ones too. Add the currency conversion, shipping and handling, etc. 10/22 mags? $23.99 at Cabelas's for the nice boring 10-shot rotary. BX-25 25-rounds for US$35. Or get a nice GSG 110-rounds for $119.99, but don't ask about the form factor or weight then.

Fact is, if you can't afford two spare mags, you can't afford the sights, bipod, adjustable cheek rest or other "cool" accessories (not to mention ammo, cleaning supplies and other consumables). Magazine price is mostly a non-issue unless you're planning to buy them in industrial quantities.

2. Speaking of weight: Mk22 weight without magazine: 6.5 lbs. Ruger 10/22: Depending on your configuration and options, anywhere from 4.30 to 7.50 lbs. Mossberg 715T flat top: 5.5 lbs. I used the manufacturer's sites for source.

3. Takedown? You really can't care about precision if you recommend a 10/22 takedown: search the reviews, they're not glowing at all. For that matter, all the 10/22 models are somewhat being painted as inaccurate and needing a barrel upgrade to be really precise. (Suther had a great post on this subject above).

4. Price? 10/22 basic minimum model is about $290. The 10/22 Takedown is about $450. Most buffed up 10/22 models are $650. The SR-22 is about $650 too. The Mossberg 715T flat top is only $270, but you'll be limited to the 10 rounds mags. ISSC Mk22 is $570. Al Flaherty's and Cabela's were my price sources. The point is: most "tacticool" weapons have a price point of about $650 and up. It's the price of the looks.


One last point: YOU did not provide a single "whole story" or data with any of your recommendations and you try to poke me about providing them? Like trolling much? Get off your little soap box, friend.

I can tell by your post count you're new. You'll get used to Little_Airwolf's particular brand of useless d_baggery and just by and large ignore him like the rest of us.

I've thought about using ignore, and I'm pretty sure I've been added to a few people's list, but I think it's a waste of time, overall. The best solution is to simply not allow anyone to get that far under your skin, it gives them a power they don't deserve.

And yes, I know that comment wasn't directed at me, but at the new user, I just thought I'd pointlessly interject my own philosophy. ;)

I'd recommend the 597Vtr (top one)
Its can be tacticalish and is some what accurate yet good enough in my books for a semi, the biggest problem is that the 30 rnds mags tend to be garbage, but shoots great with 10 rounders.

so i ended up choosing Ruger 10-22 and buy a new stock for it, thanks for every one that helped me out,
and dw i used to be the moderator on few website i usually ban these type of people but i'm not the moderator so nothing to to about it other than ignore him
