Brand new, unfired. You're looking at the muzzle end. I'm waiting for my LGS to get back to me on this matter.

EDIT: S&W replaced the handgun, facilitated by the LGS.

If S&W replaces just the barrel, will I need to get the sights adjusted?

You're looking for "combat accuracy" so I doubt anything will change.

P.S. How does it shoot?

Anytime you replace a barrel you have to re sight or adjust your point of aim.
I don't know if a barrel swap would make much of a point of impact difference in this case...it's not like the M&P9 has hand-fitted barrels or anything.

hdls: I can't remember if the M&P has the serial number on the barrel or not. If it does you'll probably want to ask for a whole new pistol just so you don't end up with a mismatched gun.

Barrels are not serial numbered.

Yeah, they're not serialed or hand fitted. Drop in and you're good to go. I've put a stock 9mm barrel and .357 barrel in my .40 and they all shoot the same.

I just had a chance to check my M&P40's barrel and I have similar, but not identical marks. Like enefgee's, mine shoots really well. After having a closer look I'm thinking now that it's not a problem but either an unavoidable artifact from manufacturing or part of the design. I'd say it's fine.

Those marks are the throating in the chamber Perfectly normal.

THe OP showed us his MUZZLE!!

LGS just got back to me. They'll be replacing the entire handgun.

EDIT: Just got back from the LGS. They told me to choose carefully, since they won't do another replacement. The replacement had a worse trigger than the one I originally bought. When I brought it up, they told me to get a Glock...
