First time out with my mosin was... interesting

do you mean something such as

EDIT:

Or this:

Those are 2 bases I used that held solid. Also didn't need to do anything to the handguard. Anything else will be too long.

Do you happen to know if the bottom one I linked will put the scope far enough back that a unbent bolt will hit it? Or will it still clear

Shooting from any type of rest will inflict more felt recoil with a Mosin.
I shoot my Mosins standing off hand and never get bruising or discomfort.
My 91/30s all pretty much shoot a foot high at 100 yrds+ too, which is common. So if your POA and POI are lining up, then you're already ahead of most owners.
Also try to utilize a hand wrap technique with a Mosin sling. Stability increases dramatically with it.

Setting the firing pin depth is easy as pie.
Turn the firing pin in until the eand is flush with the back cocking knob and the hash mark in the back of the pin and the knob line up.

I have a sling on order.

And the poi was high on the target with the irons, but once I figured that out shooting groups wasn't hard.

also shooting with the bayo on will help make it easier on the body....makes the thing super long but hey thats how they did it with them back in the day.

Rifter. if you wanna try something neat as well, there is a pistol grip you can get off ebay. It screws in with a screw and form fits and butts in with the trigger guard. I put it on my mosin andit shot way nicer with the pistol grip. Put 200 rounds or so through and no issues.
I have an archangel on the way hopefully today so mine's getting new clothes :)

Get yourself a pair of cheapo flip flops. Take the butt plate off, epoxy the flip flop to the butt plate then trim. Re-install butt plate.
You find it doesn't slip and the 1/2" of flip flop foam is a perfect recoil pad. Took me from 10 rds to over 30 with my M44.

then it might be case of bad receiver tang to stock fitting. In soviet manuals it was recommended to have some space (1-1.5mm IIRC) between tang and stock to avoid "kicking"

Gap is good, almost an exact match of this picture.

I wish I would have seen this post before ordering a limbsaver slip on.

I believe they were sighted with the bayo attached, which would pull the Poi down closer. Someone who is an expert will have to confirm.

I have a 38 Tula Round receiver that shoots on target with the bayo on. But I have a Tula 31 hex (ex-dragoon) that shoots point of aim with the bayo off. Attach the bayo and it drops a foot. 148 grain Sellier & Bellot from 1968.

I'm going out again this weekend, I'll try it with the bayonet attached. It was shooting high, I had targets printed on regular size paper and was aiming few inches below target paper entirely to get it to group on the centre of target. I'd call it a good foot low i had to aim.

This is how a 105 pound girl shoots a Mosin. She is willing to give lessons on manliness for those who are deficient.

Limbsaver fits perfect, Mosin Tool came in the mail today and I checked the firing pin protrusion my buddy adjusted By eyesight only cause its not that I don't trust him but he just winged it lol, Its bang on so I guess my buddy knew what he was doing.

Just waiting for my new scope mount that should arrive tonight and then I can get back out there this weekend and shoot some more, hopefully with more bangs and less clicks.. lol.
