Looking for a stock for my new custom rifle and need advice!

My custom 30-06 is a P17 which was used as a sniper rifle in WWII.

My beloved father had it given to him by his friend that took him hunting when he was a kid because his parents did not hunt, my father shot his first moose with it when he was 14 years old in 1948.

When my father's friend was dying he gave it to my father. My father then had a custom made to measure stock made for it by the famed stock maker Klaus Hiptmayer. The stock is made of Walnut and it has a sterling silver plaque on the butt, with my father's signature engraved on it. The engraving was done by Klaus's wife Heidi, who was renowned in her own right as a world class engraver. She has since passed away and her engraved plaque is a real work of art, very beautiful.

I have killed many deer and moose with it. My father passed away last year in February, he was my best friend and I sure do miss him! What a great guy with exceptional taste my father was!

I am getting the new rifle so I can retire my beloved father's rife, because it means more to me than just about anything on this planet, and I have abused it enough in the bush perusing table fair.

New guns can be a thing of real beauty, but for me, guns with a story and sentimental value trump them all. I would love to see pics of your Dad's gun. It sounds like a real beauty. The instructions posted by Swifty are easy to follow. They are exactly the same as for the other forum you posted pics of princess on. I also thought you hunted with, and cherished the Browning, but I could be mistaken. Wouldn't be the first time.

As for Lefty #### and Woodchopper posting the correct nomenclature, and history of the gun, I appreciate that. We all should. You need to remember that thousands of people read these threads, so being accurate is important. Why propagate error when there are people we can learn from and are willing to correct us? Their posts aren't personal.

I have owned several 191$'s and P14's over the years in various configurations , but never bastardized the designations as far as using the M or the P interchanged because there are subtle differences in them , especially in the magazine sells and of course the bolts.
It's either a 1917 or a P14
as far as I know most of the U.S. snipers were using a different bolt action in WW2

Well with all due respect, you don't know the history of my rifle, I do and I don't like the way this thread is going and if anyone recalls the title of my thread is called: Looking for a stock for my new custom rifle and need advice! and not "The history of the P17 Enfield" I would appreciate it if everyone gets back on track, or please stop derailing! Thank you

Everything I have ever read and know about rifles employed by Allied snipers in WWII does not include the use of that particular model in any widespread fashion.

You were the one that brought the rifle into your conversation.

As Woodchopper suggested he can tell you volumes about your rifle. Provide the information to him, and he can settle it right quickly.

You're getting all bent outta shape over a small thing.
It's a firearms forum, we are talking firearms. What's the problem?

I dunno this sure looks like you bringing the "custom P17"
Into your conversation.

According to you, no such rifle existed in the first place?????????????????????

I was asked by 220Swifty to describe my custom rifle, if I had of know it would turn into this, I never would have. Why are you gentlemen still continuing down this road to NOWHERE?

no, it wasn't, the snipers were using Springfields and M70 Winchesters, depending on the corps and theatre they were in, according to what I have read.
Almost forgot, and the Garand later on, but I am not a military expert, there are several on this forum that may be able to give more detail.

My most recent custom rifle was built around a refinished factory Brno model 21 stock with a nice grain pattern. If you can find a nice factory stock with a good grain pattern, there's always a lot of potential. Just an idea. However, if it's a common Tikka T3, I would leave it alone. They usually shoot lights out without any modifications. However, if you look on EE, you might find a T3 Hunter stock with a nice grain pattern. An oil refinish would look very nice on them.

Who are you going to get to do your inletting and bedding?

Apparently and accordingly to a fellow member I can not name a non sponsor shop here. I put in a call today to my gunsmith, but the guy I deal with just came back from his Grizz hunt and today he was out shooting. Must be a fun life eh? I have not discussed this with him yet, but I am sure they can do it.

As for my friends that want to disbelieve, and because I am a good sport, here is a song for you to enjoy until I can figure out how to post pictures here, enjoy!)

Just curious if Corlanes is a site sponsor? You might want to check before you pump them up too much, site rules and all.

I don't think anyone disbelieves you, rather they are trying to help you correct your nomenclature.

Well actually I was calling my custom rifle what it is, it's not my fault others on this thread don't know what a P17 is, completely out of my hands. You asked the original question and I gave you my honest answer.

As for naming the shop I did I was not aware you could not answer questions here honestly. I doubt that you are correct though, I have seen other members name shops that are not sponsors. I will double check, just to make sure.

So post a picture and put the debate to rest.

Mentioning a shop once or twice over several posts is one thing, but you've mentioned Corlanes multiple times in every thread you've started here. If I didn't know better, it would seem real schillish

Give me one good reason why I should care what others think? Go on the other site, I posted it there. Besides the way this thread is going, if I post it someone will say that the gun is not mine and that the signature is not my fathers. Just not interested.

Frankly if people don't believe what I posted, I could care less.

If you could post pics there, why not here? It's the exact same process.

I initially asked because I genuinely wanted to see the stock work and engraving (and I still do), but I suggested it a second time as it might perhaps help your case. Maybe you have a rare bird on your hands. I guess you can lead a horse to water....
