Geez its been a big weekend, mostly in the bush of a day time an back home of a night, I didn't camp out this long weekend as a few plans fell through.

So I thought , bugger it, im guna shoot a stag or seriously think about chilling out for a while on this deer hunting game.. I had 3 days to bring something home to show for my efforts.

Joefish an I hunted the Saturday, I hunted sunday arvo and then went out Again This morning, Monday.

I thought I should take the Remington 700 out for a Run, as it seems it has a liking for Stags, and generally bigger ones.
neglected since a busy Fallow rutt where it proved its spot in the safe, and Today was no exception.

270Win- Not For Sale.

Anyway, a lot of fog around the Whelan Valleys of late, the alarm sung out early and I hesitated, turned it back an hour an then got serious about things.

I got out to the spot at 730 and sat in the heater for some motivation before gathering everything an heading off along the fenceline into the back section of the place.

I was borderline on the fog line, now an then I would get a peep ahead, then nothing for a while, as I climbed a little higher I glassed the first animal for the day

stagonmoveup.jpg

It was a Stag and adrenalin kicked in. BOY O BOY A STAG
as per usual, throw the backpack to the ground and grab a rangey, click 400m, so next grab the Camera, filmed him as he moved on up for 5 minutes before out of sight and out of mind.

I cut thru the Berries again and contoured in to a spot I call Tussock Rock lookout, I glassed for only half an hour today as I was quite cold in the Shade, while the sun burst out on the Far side, so I thought today I would keep on moving.

I climbed another hundred or so in elevation an something caught my naked eye, black stump like feature, I put the Binos up for a brief Moment, an by brief I mean, up. Stag. down .Gun

Lay the pack and Range the Deer, 351meters and Perfect broadside facing to my Right
this time I set the Camera up to film the shot, I was rushing... I just spent 2 weeks in the Gatta kicking hinds around and THIS WAS A STAG.... so you could imagine

350m away a Mob of Sambar.
StagHind350m.jpg

The bloody video moved slightly just before the shot, so the deer are just on the bottom of the screen at the shot, I was spewing..

I was not sure if I even Hit the Deer??? it didn't take off right away, appeared dumbfounded, raised its tail then took off in about 4th gear flat out angling down and away into the Gulley head... 2 other deer also took off.....

The reason I quickly Aimed an shot was because I couldn't gain any further Ground without losing their sight andpossibly not seeing them again...

I had to go in a semi circle the long way around the ridge an drop into the gulley, where the wind was actually right and I thought if I did miss I may be able to get a crack at them as I stalk down to the Place of shot..

I got into the dog wood down low just above the berries, an almost right infront of me was a sambar that took off pretty quick, from close so I pressed on after the tracks and made my way down, Honk and the deer took off again, thinking by now I have screwed it all up and I should of Glassed from previous position into the gulley I suspected the deer to be......

I get on marks and follow, looking for the opposite run marks from when the shot first happened, an not the spooks, I think I am close to the spot now an take a look around, WELLL ILL BE DAMMNED

Heres a stag, sitting down, looking slightly uphill looking real crook and then came the Adrenalin....... SHOOT IT I told myself and wit ha scope on 9 I didn't even look thru it, pointed the barrel an sent one.... I think I missed but gave the deer a heartattack and it let out its last words and laid there, peacefully.

I couldn't really work out what happened.... Did I just shoot a Sambar stag at 351m with a 130gr Corelokt reload out of a .270Winchester???? or did I just shoot it from 20m as it was somehow unaware of me??

time to think about things

As I tried to put things together, I could Clearly see a Hole in the Right side, and a graze on the Left, which I cut open an found this thing

Which coincides with the Long shot.... I wsa still unsure about all of this until I got home an really put things together.. as it turns out I had a PB killshot on a Sambar, 351m with the little 270 and a 130gr CC!!

After a while I sent a few texts out and grabbed the First set of Antlers id seen the past Month or so of some pretty hard out hunting, a Great hunt and a huge Relief.. I carted out the load back down the mtn toward the ute, got in lit a smoke an gulped the last of the 2ltr ice coffee I had in my pack!!

Very nice. The 270 is a great calibre. A buddy of mine is a knife maker and uses Sambar Stag antlers for his knife handles when customers want a bone handle. Where he sources it I have no idea but now I know what the animal it comes from looks like. That looks like a good size stag to me. Congratulations.

What is that red thing on the end of your muzzle in the last pic?

haha Thanks fellas!

Mate the red thing is Electrical tape, we cover the muzzle to stop bits of foliage sticking into the end as some of the crap we walk thru is thick and loves to drop leaves an such wherever it can go!

Interesting about the sambar antlers for the Knives, haha let him know a lil Aussie would be interested in the sourcing haha!!

Thanks Dorian, no problems.

Certainly isn't Bwana!

Good job... I appreciate perseverance... that is a quality being lost with todays "I want it now!" generation.

Hey WL quick questions:

You never mention "having a tag" or "attaching the tag" to the animal, plus you seem to be able to go hunting whatever whenever.

So do residents have to purchase deer licenses and are there limits to what you can shoot or is it a free-for-all down there?
What do non residents have to do to go hunting ?

Thanks

I live in Victoria which may just happen to have the Best hunting regs in the World?

I pay $50 for a "Permit" (permissions to hunt Crown land) an that entitles me to also hunt the Alpine Nation Park most of the Year. Also I can Kill as many Deer as I would like in that 12 months by day light hunting only.

Farm owners are now "allowed" to Spotlight Deer from their own land as numbers have increased.

International License have just been put in, I think its around 2 weeks, or a Month a international hunter can purchase a "Permit" and come hunting with me No worries! as long as you have a Gun license.

this is through a similar group as " national park rangers" although they look after the "State forests", incl GMA GAME MANAGMENT Australia.

This permit does not Allow any other Animals to be killed. EXCEPT a WILD DOG in SF but not Nat Park.

Because the World runs Tags an such, and It makes ALOT of money.... You betcha Australia will follow suit in time. We will Argue that though.

I live inthe Bush, a Small town of 2000 people in all the district......... more deer than people :)

I'd offer anyone who is up for the Challenge, place to stay, guns to use and Deer to hunt. Victoria. Australia.

Cheers!
