Bolt vs Semi Auto .22LR Rifle

Hello :cool:

I was wondering what the more experienced and pro shooters thought of this:
1- Is bolt action more accurate than a semi automatic .22?
2- Which one is better for a newbie to learn the basics of shooting before trying bigger calibres?

bolt action is what your after. semi is good for eating up ammo, bolt is for precision work. both will likely be more accurate than you. ;)
if your new have no worries you will likely end up with both lol.

So what is your favourite bolt .22? I kind of like the looks of the Ruger American Rimfire, but only shot different 10/22s so far.
 
Bolt is correct but no one explained why......

A bolt uses the entire energy generated by the cartridge to send the bullet down range, it's slower for follow up shots but more accurate and teaches shot selection over pray and spray.

A semi auto uses some of the energy from the cartridge to cycle the action and chamber the following round, so less of the energy is harnessed to send the round down range. It is quicker for follow up shots but tends to be less accurate.

I learned on a bolt. I would suggest that its better for a beginner to learn on its more controlled and shot for shot slightly more accurate. It'll teach discipline and control which are things a new shooter needs to learn
 
My Volquartsen easily shoots sub moa at 100 yards, which is better than many bolt action 22lr rifles, but my Cooper and Anschutz bolt actions, are still my favorite rimfires.
 
Also consider a Marlin. Perhaps the best value rifle for superior accuracy. Or a Cooey, they're neat because they're made in Canada.

I believe that in many cases if you were to compare an out of the box, untweaked 22lr bolt action rifle with an out of the box, untweaked semi auto 22lr you would find the bolt action to be the more accurate.

2- Which one is better for a newbie to learn the basics of shooting before trying bigger calibres?

Teaching and learning the basics of shooting can be done on either a bolt or semi action 22lr.

I've had and liked both actions. For my 22lr hunting needs (mostly stationary rabbits and grouse with pests like skunks, raccons and porcupines in the mix) I've found that the 10/22 is quite sufficient. And, it is way more fun plinking with a 10/22 than it is with a bolt action.

I like the bolt so much I bought a big brother TR too keep it company,my 1022 stays in the gun safe now.

for both questions the answer is bolt

1) given the same budget a bolt will always be more accurate. a $400 savage will outshoot a $400 semi with ease. the only way you are going to outshoot it is if you spend $1k+ upgrading a semi. even then its tough to beat
2) to learn basics always use a bolt. so much less to go wrong. generally they arent as picky with ammo as well. because of the simplicity there are less issues which you can blame on the gun so you can concentrate on improving your own skill.

for a suggestion: if you have the budget i would go with a CZ. great middle of the road bolt .22 with great accuracy as well as fit and finish. for something entry level i would go with savage. great price and accuracy for the dollar. i also love the accutrigger they have. savage also has a TON of different models to suit every taste.
