So I am in the market for a new 9.3×62

What would be the best options out there - and why?

I am not above imports. As a future investment, hoarding the 'dough' is not above me for large purchases.

Both the Browning Maral, and matching self loading BAR, appeal to me aesthetically; as does the CZ 550 FS. Are there other contenders?

Is fixed magazines more efficient in these non-combat rifles? Or, conversely, do they simplify minor repairs and the cleaning process? Etc.

And for the final crowning piece: a low powered scope with a blunt optic like a German duplex no1 , or a simple post/ dot. Which maker and reticle is your preference?

Cheers!

Ruger No.1 with a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5 or 1.75-6X scope sent to Korth for a German #4 reticle... classy rig.

As you've already identified the CZ550 FS as desirable, IMHO you need look no further. A hinged floorplate doesn't get lost, misplaced, or inadvertently dropped out of the rifle while on the trail. While there have been horror stories about floorplates opening under the recoil of powerful cartridges in dangerous game situations, a floorplate that opens too easily should be viewed as a deficiency, and like any firearm deficiency, it should be addressed before taking the rifle afield. i've never seen the floorplate on a Brno 602 or CZ550 suffer this malady.

I prefer a hinged floorplate rather than a detachable magazine. Hard to argue with the CZ or one of the M98s from TradeEx. I'm not a fan of the BAR so I can't give much of a recommendation there. Always found them too heavy.

Hoyt hit the nail on the head for a scope...either have your tame gunsmith special order you a VX3 with a German #4 or buy a used scope on the EE and sent it in for a new reticle. Anyone who has been around for a while knows that I'm a big believer in the Leupold 1.5-5x. I actually brought one back from the farm to put on my 366 Wagner this fall.

What about the new Zastava's at tradex? The price seems good, and they look good? Has anyone her have experience with them?

Getting a;) ".366 Wagner", a Zastava was route I took.

Granted, while it isn't as 'smooth' as other choices out there, it does shoot well.

;)The action will smooth out with use:).

9.3x62 CZ550's come up for sale every now and then on the Exchange Forum, or you can put up a WTB ad. Re-barreling an existing rifle is another option.

I have a plain, simple Leupold FXII 4x33 Heavy Duplex reticle, with low Alaska Arms LLC QD rings on my synthetic stocked CZ550, and could not think of a better scope for the purpose - simple, extremely tough, very quick/obvious reticle.

Mike i ve heard some lovely stories with some users loosing their tikka magasine ... never good in bear country ....

Find a nice 30-06 or 270 in a used rifle you like, order a barrel, chamber it.
There isn't a lot of 9.3x62 rifle selection.
I have a m70 extreme weather or ruger hawkeye stainless that are going to get this treatment. Just need to decide

I notice that there are no one opining Sauer 303 or Blaser models. Are they more prestige/hype than necessarily "better" rifles? Thanks for the input so far! Particularily on optic strength. Cheers!
I have a sauer in 9.3 and highly recommend it. Could also look at other european brands like merkel, heym, steyr, etc which I also highly recommend. After all you are looking at a 9.3x62 caliber which is very european

My 9.3x62 made by Zastava has so far killed three animals. Two of them died on track, I mean they did not move more than half foot. The third bear moved 20 feet, as it fell down 20 feet from a tree.
The action is rough, I doubt you will be able to smooth it out from usage. If I had money, I will buy one made by cz. But again, you get what you pay for. Zastava is about 400 dollars cheaper than cz, so Zastava is a better deal for me.
