I'm new to reloading and I was wondering if you could load a .243 Winchester with a 30 or 40 grain bullet. What would be the velocity? I noticed in one of my gun books that a .22-250 could be loaded with a 30 grain.

No such thing as a .243" 30 or 40 grain bullet. Don't think there's a mold either. Really odd that Lyman doesn't make any molds in 6mm at all.
As mentioned, a .22-250 isn't a 6mm.

Maybe you should get a hold of Red Green, I'm sure he could come up with a way for you to do it. His solution might involve duct tape though

Dont mess with a good thing. I think hornady's 53gr bullet is the lightest currently available? driving light bullets a high velocities causes fragmentation in flight ie shrapnel which equals no fun....which in turn equals unsafe...., Danger Will Robinson Danger!!!!
A lot of Smarter people than you and spent a lot of time figuring the ballistic thing out. Why hurt their feelings???? Why????

70 or 75 grains is the lightest bullets I will use in a 243. I drive these at 3450 to 3500 and they have a good enough BC that they maintain velocity quite well and won't be bashed around too much by some wind.
In short, an excellent load for coyotes, or just having fun with.

I second 70 grain bullets. My remington 700 will shoot noslers or sierras very well with varget, h4895, and imr 3031. Really good selection of slugs and easy to load for. The true benefit of the 6mm guns though is the ability to shoot heavier 100 grain+ slugs with very high BC's.

Velocity only counts for so much. Don't get hung up on it. My 243 loves 70 grain loads but after 600 yards it doesn't hold a candle to my 87 grain vmax load. 58 grain loads would not be able to keep up at longer distances even if you are driving them at blistering speeds.

Brother, you need to study more. You are gonna hurt something. If I wanted to throw 30-40 gn bullets from a .243, I'd get some #1or 2 lead shot and swage it out of round. Work up a load with pistol/shotgun powder (right now all mine are using 800X) and keep it around 1800fps. Might be a decent plinking round. And, no, I am not trying this. I got too much to do right now. Seems all my shooting is done in sub-zero temperatures since I have more time in the winter.

Some good advice here.

I can easily get a 55 gr bullet to 4100 fps in my 26" barreled 243.

However, you'd be best off using a sabot if you wanted to shoot a bullet weighing 30 grains or so out of a 6mm bore, but it would need to be 17 cal, not 22 cal, in order for the sabot to have even material to properly support the smaller bullet. I don't know if 6mm/17 cal sabots are manufactured, but 30 cal/22 cal still are (as pictured):

I've shot 50 gr 22 cal sabotted bullets out of a 30-06, but it was at least 10 years ago. I put one shot through my chrony and it showed in excess of 4200 fps, but something dislodged one of the chrony's arms and that was the only shot I put through it. The bullets did not disintegrate - they all hit the target intact in a 4-6" group.

But who sells them?
