going to get a rem 700 soon. Now looking for a scope.

I have one, NC star...I know it's crappy but didn't realize it's that crappy until I see through my friend's Vortex ...that view ... crystal clear.

So gentlemen, any suggestions? a scope that's better than NC star yet affordable ? what are you using now?

Pretty vague question. One man's "cheap" scope could be a $1200 Leupold and another a $300 Nikon. Tell us how much you want to spend and we'll tell you what is best to buy at that price range.

Dump the NC Star, I wouldn't even put one on my pellet gun.

Rem 700..... personally, I like a Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm or a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm as a starting point. :cool:

You will be well served with a Leupold's VX2s. They are very bright and a good deal in the long compared to a cheaper scope that will be replaced.

You need to state the action length and intended use for the rifle for better suggestions. A lightweight short action rifle with need a different scope
than a long range magnum or short range bush gun.

I can tell you from experience, the elite 3-9x40 fits the long action rem 700 like a glove. Just put one on mine in a set of talley lightweight low rings. The older Burris fullfields(USA built) fit as well. Not sure about new ones. The vx II and vx 2 are nice scopes as well. Have some in 2-7 on short actions.

Vortex is great for warranty! I have a crossfire 2 1-4 on my Tavor and love it. I also had a corssfire 4-16 (i believe) but never ended up mounting it. After I bought it, I decided to continue to look and around which actually paid off for me. I ended up finding a bushnell elite 6-24 for only 100$ more than I paid for my vortex. So my point is that Vortex is nice and have an amazing warranty, but dont rush it. Take a look around and try to find a nice clearance price scope. Wholesale sports has decent sales on optics every now and then.

I only use the purdy ones on my rifles! Dan Aykroyd (Brian) that worked at Cabela's WPG once said "all my rifles are wearing Leupold scopes", I said mine too!:d

I decided on a nikon Monarch 3 2-8x36 on one of my .308scouts. Just about 500 after tax. Very pleased and impressed with this "budget" optic.

If he's upgrading from an NcStar, his idea of cheap is probably not $1200...

^Exactly.

To the OP~as others have asked, what's your budget? There is value out there in the $200-$300 range if you're open to the idea of used.

I said (recently, in this forum) that 10 years ago..you'd have had a hard time convincing me a scope needs to cost more than $150. Ten years later... A scope I bought a few months back cost almost 10x that much, and my primary hunting scope is a Vortex Viper HS that cost around $650-$700. I don't say that to brag, as I'm certainly not a "rich" guy by any means. Rather, that over time..and with allot of use...you realize that good...or even decent optics actually are worth the investment. I don't know anybody who was harder to convince than me on that...but reluctantly..I've come full circle on the issue. To me, the gun price WAS the big hit, optics WERE very much a second thought. Now, I save 2x as long...because the scope price often rivals, or even exceeds the cost of the gun it's going on.

However...that's not to say starting with entry-level optics is a bad idea~it's not. Lots out there that will probably serve you well. I will say this~it's important with any optics to check what the warranty/customer service is like for whatever manufacturer you choose. From personal experience with Vortex, and, having owned about 5 of them now..I think their customer service is the best...and...the DiamondBack line is about as low as you want to go. I have a 4-12AO BDC and it's a fine scope for the money. I have it on a .22 so the AO was important to me, for centerfire...you could pick the model without it if you're going new;
