So I bought an AR15 stubbie on Friday on impulse. Like all things that aren't properly thunk through, I found myself in a bad tactical position: it's a flat top and I have no optics for it! Oh sure I got a set of flip up irons somewhere, and the big 3x9 Swarovskis and Zeiss kicking around in the armoury...but those aren't going to work here.

Complicating things is that I wear glasses. I don't get along with EOtechs or other holographic sights. What do you figure for a stubbie CQB gun? I had a Trijicon with the green triangle but that was a bulky scope to my mind. In a perfect world I would like a hell for stout compact 1x4 but the one offered by Nightforce has a reticle with more crap going on than a heads up display in a CF18 fighter plane! Who makes a good milspec compact with a simple reticle suitable for work out to 100~200 yards?

What are you old hands running on your guns?
 
I had a Burris tac30 1-4 and it was a great scope for around $400. Now I've got the vortex strike eagle 1-6 and I couldn't be more happy. It was about $600 with the mount. It all depends how much you want to spend.
 
I would strongly recommend an Aimpoint Pro for a CQB gun, but if you need magnification and have money to spend I would recommend the Sightron STAC 1-7x24
 
I still go back once in a while to my Hilux CMR 1X4 ( bought a couples ) they are great and inexpensive, i call them my transition optics... JP.
 
Esthetically, anything other than a Aimpoint T1 or H1 micro on a 7.5" stubbie would look bulky and unweldy. The gun would be top heavy especially with an Elcan.
A stubbie can hit out to 300yds but it wasn't designed to do so. It is a close quarter firearm where traditional reticles are useless.
Why do you not like RDSs?

Yup, same here on my rifles w/ RDS. It's a PITA, but I deal with it as well, but since they OP rules those out, they probably aren't what he's looking for ;)
 
I am always amazed at how well my Bushnell TRS-25 hi-rise works on my 11.5

cant do better for just over a hundred bucks on amazon... inexpensive and effective to 100 yards with my eyes and the 3 MOA red dot it uses

but if a RDS was a no go.. I would go back to my nikon or bushnelll 1-4x glass.. It was the next best thing for the $$
 
I agree with Enefgee, a small prismatic optic from either Vortex or Leupold might suite the OP.

I wear glasses too but found a Eotech worked well for me - it's got the small footprint I was looking for , looks proportional and I use a G33 mag when I want to reach out ( toggles between my AR and Tavor )
Fun range toys the PDW's , got mine just UNDER 21"

 
Vortex Spitfire 3x prism scope, etched reticle so you can run it with or without illumination even astimatism, It has enough magnification for CQB work out to 300 m
 
RDS and Halo's don't work for my eyes either. I've tried etched reticles and like them but I cheap so it's "old-school" irons on both my Range Toys….
