All this talk about the possibility of us restricted hadguns owners to be grandfathered if things go sour after the election have me wondering. What will it mean if we get grandfathered? Will it mean that we can keep what we already have and not buy more or will it mean we will still have the right to buy more? How does the 12(6) grandfathering work?

Thanks

Gilbert

Given the apparent high probability of a minority government, hard too imagine anything changing too quickly so i wouldn't fret just yet.

I don't worry about all the BS. We have been through this for so many years & the sky hasn't fell yet.
Enjoy the firearms sports, be safe & to hell with the politics crap!

The sky fell in the 1990's and in the decades before that , the sky fell quite a few times after that too with individual rifles . But yes no worry as long as my guns are safe ... for now .

Personally, I'm not worrying about all the hype & BS either.

There are no rules on how future firearm legislation will be implemented. There are past precedents regarding grandfathering but no guarantee that they'll be followed. Things could go better, things could go worse, things could stay the same. The mistake some folks made last time was trying to guess what was going to happen and failing. There were rumours that all 4" and less we're going to be banned, so some folks I know sold or rebarrelled theirs, missing out on 12.6 grandfathering...since the concept of grandfathering by class was unknown before then

My my advice is buy what you want now.

Keep what we own, maybe no acquiring more, maybe only buying and selling amongst current licence holders like the MG guys can now and no new licences issued is grandfathering.
12(6) is mostly about inheriting pre-1946 prohibited stuff. Only from your immediate family though. No uncles etc.
This not covered on your RPAL course?

Many people have not taken the PAL (or RPAL) courses. Besides you are wrong; 12(6) is mostly about possessing and acquiring certain prohibited firearms.

Depends. The provisions for grandfathering some hypothetical future gun ban will have to be contained in the legislation of the future hypothetical gun ban.

As for the current 12.6, its complex. But generally, if you owned one before, you can continue to own, use, sell and acquire more.

Compared to other 12.x where you can own, not use, and not acquire more. So what will the future look like? Its a crap shoot.

I have 12.3. I can continue to possess what I have. I CAN acquire
Other 12.3 firearms. I can no longer take them shooting.

nothing will happen.
a minority government is what we will probably have and it will have a hard enough time trying to pass a budget forget about anything ground breaking like changing gun laws.
