With Hodgdon now owning IMR and distributing Winchester powders they have produced a great website combining the data from all three companies.

Go Here to see it.

I sent them a thank you. They never had any data for the 52gr .223 though but that's OK. I will probably move up in bullet weight and not down. This is kind of off topic but...why is it the lighter bullets use more powder than the heavier ones?

Less inertial confinement (they move out of the way more easily because they weigh less) = lower pressure for a given powder load. So more powder to bring up the pressure. And there's more space in the case, so where that is the limited factor you can stuff more in.

Why does a dog lick his own - oh, I see JYC already covered that point.

One other factor would be that heavier bullets are often longer and have more surface contact with the rifling, adding to the resistance to pushing it down the barrel, bringing up the chamber pressure.

Thanks for the link 'boo! :D

Man have I been looking for a site like this. The other sites dont seem to want to give it away but these guys are right out there with it. I guess they want to sell some powder eh? Muchas grass compadre.

Can you give me a ball park price on the new manual? Cheers!

$9.99 + taxes.

The manual doesn't have anywhere as near as many loads as the web site. The article on IMR Trail Boss and it's use as a cast bullet load for rifles however is well worth the 10 bucks. :)

Agreed. In last year's manual there was a short story called "Me and Skeeter Get Evicted" and was worth the $10 alone. Sadly no story this year...:(
