Leica Scopes

I state an experience and wow, the push back is massive. Did I say ALL of brand X was bad... No I indicated my experience and offered a note of caution.

I have owned and really like a variety of Leica optics. And Yes, I have had a chance to look through a range of Leica high end products including their spotters and rangefinders which I really quite like.

The scopes I have seen, didn't impress. See, that wasn't so bad was it?

Enjoy...

Jerry

I wouldn't want people to get the wrong impression from this thread. Sightron s3 scopes are great scopes and an excellent value. That being said, they aren't the be all end all and there are other scopes with better glass and function, albeit, they're generally more money.

That's pretty much how it works with most things. :)

Anyhow, back to Leica scopes, which this thread is about.

Still waiting for Jerry's Sightron is better than the new Vortex Gen IIs review myself. Can't wait to inform guys like Rob Ormond, Frank Galli, Terry Cross and the the hundreds of other shooters down South that haven't had one negative thing to say about them. Sure they will have a good chuckle on how they fail optically.

I'm sure you do a lot for the sport Jerry and I enjoy your passion, but the Sightron gig is getting old.

"You invade pretty much every optics post citing Sightron as the "best" and it just happens to be the only brand you sell. Your excuse is always that you haven't found a brand as good to sell yet."

Nail meets head.

You bring Sightron into, or take a negative angle on other brands, in many threads, uninvited. Including this one of course, which was a simple request for information about Leica scopes. And by information, most tactful forumites would chime in if they had meaningful, extensive experience with a product...

Here is a classic example:

The OP asked: "Nightforce vs Schmidt and Bender vs Vortex vs US Optics"

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...s-Vortex-vs-US-Optics?p=11641668#post11641668

Here are some Coles Notes...

You start out with:

"At the high end of the optics market, it is features and details that really decide "good or not". Add the Sightron SIII and SVSS to your list of options.

I have reviews of the SVSS against the top tier competition high mags scopes... Might prove helpful.

When I get a moment, I will publish my thoughts on the newest Vortex Razor... the Sightrons are better."

The OP didn't ask about Sightron, but you tell him to add it to his options, then give a one-liner to assess and eliminate the Vortex Razor...

Then:

"PS for the Vortex Razor gen 2, my suggestion is to take a close look at the scope you want to buy and ensure that it will work properly through its entire range of operation. The brand new in the box scope I had for a review failed optically and was sent back.... YMMV.

The 2 USO scopes, sent by USO, for me to review had so many problems, the review never happened. But that was a few years ago so hopefully, things have improved. "

So you received not one, but two "wonky" USO scopes, and a Vortex Razor Gen 2 that must have been QC'd at 4:59 pm on a Friday before the long-weekend and was likewise "wonky" as well. This is in addition to the "wonky" Leica and "wonky" Swarovski that you've also mentioned.

And you feign shock and chagrin over the "push-back"?

No one is offended by your experience or enthusiasm. But don't do those, and your loyal customers a disservice by angling your commentaries in such a biased manner.

I'm sure you might better appreciate this if other dealers employed the same tactics with the brands that you conduct business with.

I have a pair of Leica Trinovids that need warranty service and was informed that Leica products have to go to NJ nowadays as there are no servicing centres in Canada anymore. This is BS, Leica has great products but I live in Toronto and should be able to get service locally,

If you're considering Leica scopes know that warranty work will take a lot of time and require you to ship them to one single service centre for all of North America, not acceptable IMO

I have 5 leica scopes now along with 6 swarovski and 4 zeiss. For the $ leica glass is clearer to my eyes than the competition at the same price point.

Because Toronto is the centre of the universe?

I had an old set of Leitz Trinovids where the rubber on the eye cups was wore out. I phoned Leica in NJ and they mailed me out a new set, free.
There aren't many scope manufacturers that have warranty centres in Canada. Leupold has a great one, but I hate to be the bearer of bad news.........it's all the way in Alberta. ;)

####, you're a grump! Lighten up Francis,

I have S&B, Zeiss,Nightforce, Sightron etc etc... I will say this about sightron SIII series. One would be very hard pressed to find a scope to compete with it in it's price range(imo).

Well...I drank the Leitz Kool Aid a long LONG time ago from M3 to R4 including SL2 MOTS etc ....well everything including lllf etc etc..binoculars enlargers tripods..you name it. They are excellent (outstanding!) BUT not above releasing a few real stinkers to the market like the CL and the M5 etc... even the R3 and R4 were made (for the most part) by Minolta.... so not all is wunderbar in the land of Leitz. But overall they are pretty hard to beat. However a Leica scope made by leupold wouldn't be at the top of my list if the option were one of the older Zeiss Diavari or Diatal...

And to add...I don't mind sending optical equipment to New York if that's were the factory trained techs are AND the repair equipment to return the item to factory specs...the alignment and purging equipment isn't cheap and if every service centre had it their overhead (and the product price!) would skyrocket!

Just call them or send an email. I got a hold of the NJ warranty center regarding a rangefinder, within a half hour they set up paid shipping at the ups store. I sent it back for free, and had a NEW rangefinder in two weeks. I'll take that kind of service anyday! Just for comparison, I have a leupold that got sent back three weeks ago, hoping it would be back for hunting season I call to check on it...I get the story that they just moved and It'll likely be a month or so before they get back on track. I'm now looking at having to buy a replacement.

Mystic..I enjoy most of your posts but you are going overboard a lot now pushing Sightron...even on many posts where they aren't even being asked about.

This spring I looked at a Leica and Swarovski Z5....I couldn't tell the difference but went with the Swarovski Z5 for my coyote rifle. Leica make excellent products.

Cheers!!

Thanks for all the advice guys. I didn't mean to start that lead to all the arguing. I actually do own two sightron scopes but I was hoping to get a scope that's a bit lighter for a 375H&H I have on the way. Given Leica's reputation with binoculars and cameras (and the price) their scopes seemed like a good alternative. I still have a bit of time before my rifle arrives so I'll keep doing my research. I'm much obliged for all of your advice.
