Locked out of logging roads on vancouver island. It was fine for the public to hunt with a bow in bow season, but they lock us all out as soon as the shooting season starts? Why?

Island timberlands, and western forest products have opened all the normal mainline gates (some only on w/e) check their websites for current info.

Well friday night the ladysmith one was locked, and asking about apparently they all were. But its good if we are back in again.

Well, as far as i know we keep a huge distance from people working, i go the opposite direction from any crew working. Also only opening up the island for recreation between 6 am and 4 pm weekends only is idiotic.

The deer are most active at dusk.

Who waved their magic wand and said these companies " own " the land. For what? $10 and and some campaign contributions 100 years ago? This was native land, and i am pretty sure most of those treaties are still active.

Even if you discount all that, no company or private entity should be able to own that much of the total land area...especially since everything else is a thin line of urban ribbon on one side of the islands coastal area and the cities, which also are costal.

Sorry this is way out of line...

Theres no way this should have happened, or been alowed to have happened.

Ya i get that crews want to be safe. No cutting corners there.

I guess my biggest distaste for this problem is it seems 90%+ land mass from strathcona all the way to sook is essentially controlled by an unelected unaccountable body only interested in its own agenda.

Workers want to be safe, but in reality what worker has ever been hit in the island woods by a stray bullet? I can imagine the answer is no one, but the odds would be astronomical i should think.

It has more to do with stay away from our expensive machines and dont steal stuff.

They treat us like we are getto criminals

Completely different country. IIRC, Grand Prairie is pretty open. Hunting in Duncan/Nanaimo the average shot is bayonet distance. Really thick and lush, 10,000 stalks/acre country. No missed shot is going to travel 200 yards without stopping in a tree. Have never seen a forestry worker in my travels on the FSR in Duncan.

They also outlawed atvs and such as well. Wont even let you into their campgrounds with them. Made the news.

Increasingly becoming a totalitarian state run by private interests.

Also no crew is logging in the evening. So what the hell!?

It's illegal to interfere with a lawfull hunt. Call your MP, local CO and the wildlife ministry and complain.
Nuthin a generator and a 12" cuttoff saw can't fix in about 20 minutes.

It's the same as anything these days, the actions of a few morons dictates the rights of the majority.
They treat the public like "getto criminals", because of one person(s) who did shoot up or steal their expensive equipment.

I suggest you give them a call and inquire about access, worst they say is no.

Cheers,

Well it is clearly stated in the regs we are shut out and at the mercy of the lords who run the forest.

Its like 1400's england.

Maybe the deer have been kicking back under the table ?

Good thing one of my best friends is running for a very winnable MP spot in this riding. Conservative obviously. Maybe he can do something.

People have been calling...everyones just getting a sweet voice on the other end of the line stating there is nothing we can do at this time. Also we should just have a nice day.

My day would be a lot nicer if i could hunt properly in my area without having to travel 600-800 miles away

Problem is the land in question is "private land", or you at least have to cross through it to get to crown land.

It's a different world over here on the Great Isle of Van....... The Bull$hit flows strong here with regards to backcountry access.

the put gates up on private land, they own the land and therefor control who has access and when, this isn't a case of locking people out of crown land

Thats the problem!

the whole place has been deemed private land

The only part thats not is strathcona park, or long beach federal parkland which you cant even stop your car if your driving through with a gun, and I.R. Land.

Either get your tags in the first week in bow season, or just spend gas and time in the afternoon wasting away while the deer wait until everyone goes home.

Id also add that there is municipal forested area that also gets logged. Only thing is it also is a non hunting area. There is a small accessesible patch of land in duncan area that is municipal, and you can bow hunt or hunt with a shotgun only. You could circle the whole area in 20 min driving.

^ I used to hunt in that shotgun area on foot.

I thought the land you were talking about is crown land leased? Where are you trying to access?

Apparently it is owned. And it is essentially most of the island. The companies are getting the idea to start poking around with things like selling parts to developers and making insane $$$$$$$$ for ocean front views. Selling us back our own land they got for almost nothing... Never mind that its on the jun de fuca trail.... Or they decided to charge rent for boat sheds on shawnagin lake a few years ago until they rescinded...because they say they own the land under the water... They are bullies trying to see how far they can push us before we push back.
