Ranger rifle for civilians

Save yourself the trouble/wait and just get yourself a Black Bear in .308, no mine isn't for sale anytime soon ;)

Why couldn't they just buy something off the shelf? They've been using some old iron for a long time. There are so many better ways to spend that kind of money.

I believe they had trials, but I'm not sure why they literally didn't just get PGW/PDW all Canadian made rifles in McMillan stocks. Half the price and twice the rifle. Laminate is CHEAP stock material, like injection molded plastic is probably the only thing cheaper...
Basically in the end you have a $12,000 Ruger Gunsite in a pelican case.

That's exactly what I was thinking

^^^ $12,000, is that right? Where on earth did you get that? Liberal Party website? Or from Sheldon?

In September, I got a live look at a Ranger rifle at a military gun show and since Colt Canada reps were nearby, I persuaded one of them to try to find out if Colt has plans to eventually sell a version on the civvie market. He took my contact info but never has called back- or he did and I screened his call out because I didn't recognise the source. Oh well. But I'll say one thing, at no time was a $12,000 list price mentioned

I have a Tikka T3 lite that I am turning into a "ranger rifle" of sorts. Will probably be a bit of a process.

I just received a skinner sight for the Tikka T3. Very small, nice low profile. I believe he has them made but not on the sight if anyone is interested.

Thanks to the donation of a Tikka T3 battue front sight assembly by the gentleman known as The Kurgan I am well on my way to having it ready to shoot. The gun is currently at the smith having the front sight affixed. Fingers crossed I will have it out soon with skinner rear/battue front sight combo.

Probably unlikely I will scope this gun so I will not be putting a rail on it. one could still be attached in front of the peep sight I suppose.

The next step is a laminate stock with a good recoil pad, for the rifle is chambered in the "anemic" .338 win mag.

Down the road I hope to acquire the metal drop box conversion and an aluminum bolt shroud.

I think a T3 battue in .308 is about as close as you're going to get to an off the shelf ranger rifle.

The first 125 rifles will cost $1.5 million....or $12,000 per.

The rest will be $4000 per (estimate by the GOV).
http://www.cbc.ca/m/news/canada/thunder-bay/canadian-rangers-test-new-top-tier-weapon-1.3143122

That's the only numbers I could find....
The government will in fact issue two contracts to Colt Canada. The first contract, valued at approximately $1.5 million, is for Colt Canada to manage the design competition, as well as the delivery of up to 125 test and evaluation rifles. Colt Canada itself will not be a contender for the rifle design. The Department of National Defence (DND) and Public Works and Government Services Canada will fully participate in evaluating the design bids, along with Colt Canada as the competitively selected manufacturer.

The second follow-on contract will enable Colt Canada to buy the technical data package and a manufacturing license agreement for the design which will be manufactured at Colt Canada. This contract also includes quality control, the production of spare parts, and accessories such as cases and trigger safety locks. Canada will contract General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, also an identified partner through the strategic source agreement with the MSP, to supply the ammunitions. The production contract is expected to be awarded in early 2016

While it may be a fantastic rifle I honestly don't think it is a better rifle than the CZ Ranger rifle.
The CZ has a wood stock that may be perceived as less rugged. But when you take into account the k98, sks, SMLE, and a metric ton of other battle rifles that have stood the test of time, I would expect my stock to last longer than I.
The 557 action is similar to the Remington 700 but I would give quality of work to the CZ.
Very Nice Fiber Optic Front sight Sits On The end of the 20 inch Czech barrel, and while the rear sight is ok it is a glorified pistol sight. I have a NECG CZ 550 peep sight on the way to replace it. The top of the receiver has a picatinny rail over top of CZ own mounting grooves. The rail is channeled so the open sights are usable with it in place. This definitely adds options but my preference for this rifle is an open sight system.
The 10 round box magazine on the 557 ranger is well constructed. The body is steel while the follower is polymer and the floor plate is aluminum. A highly polished feed ramp leading into the chamber helps the system to be highly reliable.
The biggest drawback to this rifle for me is the safety. It is only a two position and while it is nice that CZ is using the North American style of forward is off and rearward is on, I strongly believe that this rifle should have a three position safety that locks the bolt handle closed for tramping through the bush. Even if you don't want a round in the chamber it keeps the action cleaner if the bolt can't be knocked open.
To remove the bolt CZ uses the same method Ruger does with their 77/357 rifles. A tab on the opposite side of the bolt handle gets pressed down to slide the bolt out.
The firing pin cocks part way on opening and finishes cocking on the closing motion. The trigger is adjustable and has a smooth take up and breaks without any grit or mushy feel. I like CZ triggers alot and this one is as good as any.

If your looking for your very own Ranger style rifle the CZ 557 has what you need in spades. And for $1300.00 at Wolverine it won't be unattainable.

Jody

That CZ's a good looking unit all right Jody just looked it up I hadn't paid much attention to them. I'm going to look one over next time I'm to civilization. Though I must say I'm suprised that you wouldn't have picked Tikka, heritage wise and all ;)

Thanks guys for clarifying that the CTRs have landed in Canada albeit a few here and there at this point it seems.

I have been trying hard to like the Tikka T3 for awhile now my friend and it just doesn't work for me.
I have owned a few of the older generation Tikkas and a few Sako rifles, but I just don't care for the T3.
The CZ rifles now really do it for me. I won't give up my Sako's but I seem to reach for these CZ more often than not.

Not a t3 fan either Jody the only two reasons I'm interested in the CTR is there's a lot less plastic used nice metal mag and they make them in 260 which I've got all horned up over lately. OK 3 reasons I like the stout 20 inch barrel too.
