Standing Offhand CHALLENGE

I look forward to seeing a lot of posters shooting "game legal" calibers from sporter rigs. This should be a great way to prepare for big game.

Practically nobody posted on the last thread on the subject.

The real challenge comes when the hunter has his once in a lifetime shot opportunity, his hunt salvaging opportunity, or one that cost a small fortune to set up, or maybe it also has the potential to get someone killed if screwed up. Often that shot has to be taken offhand, and at that second you're going to either feel your heart drop right out of your ass or you're going grin a little because you know beyond any doubt that you can do this, because you've done it 1000 times or 10,000 times before.

When that time comes and it will, the ammo you burnt, or the match you came in last in, or the pure misses in front of 20 witnesses, or the time your brother-in-law is still bugging you about won't be embarrassments, they will the best pressure you ever put yourself under and the best money you ever spent. When its now or never, do or die, put up or shut-up time your first thought is either going to be "Oh ####" or "Perfect, I got this".

Uh Huh.
Guys been trying in the precision challenge, some very high quality rifles, not sure what the percentage is making less than 1/2 MOA , but it sure separates BS from Bull true.

Yes, I did both the 100m and 300m challenges successfully, but would not even attempt this one without more practice. I am interested to see some results in this challenge. I posted an offhand challenge in another forum, requiring 12 shots into an 8" circle, and two years later, with lots of tries and over 17,000 views....I think only two shooters made the cut. Only time and tries will determine how this challenge stacks up as it requires fewer shots, but into a smaller group. I made this challenge with the assumption there would be some silhouette shooters (used to smaller groups), and some "precision shooters" using heavier rigs (which induce fatigue in longer strings).

Just to get some kinda pic on this thread. Not on your target and shot a while ago. But a pic none the less. 10 shots with a 325 wsm, under 4" group, point of aim was the green dot, gun sighted in 3"high at 100.

Great idea! There is nothing like a challenge to add purpose and excitement to a day at the range.
Hopefully no one will mind if I post a result that fails to meet the standards, I will just be doing my best.

Sounds good Robert, post what you get. The idea is to get out and have a bit of fun with your guns. The names of the successful challengers will be included in the OP, but every "good sport" willing to give this a go is encouraged to post their attempts.

Maybe a sling in another Challenge, but not this one. I wanted this to just be between the shooter and the gun. If I said slings were OK, somebody might want it back in the Precision section:)

Ok, gave it a shot after the silhouette match today...doing good till I pushed one up, then pulled one down FLINCH - gotcha...
Ended up at 7.5" for 7 shots... ignore the extraneous 223 hole. Rem 700 CDL, 7-08

Thats pretty good! You've got a very dead big game animal there. Offhand is real tough.. I do anything I can to avoid shooting offhand while hunting.

My attempt with my Winchester 94 You can see two holes near the top, two holes near the center
and three holes angled along the bottom. Each of my targets have a hole in the top center for hanging on a hook.
This is about a 12 inch group. What can I say? I took on too much without enough practice.
I am sure that this rifle can do much better, it was me waving around as I got fatigued.

And finally, my 1954 WSS supergrade SKS that I am not as familiar with as my 1950 refurb that I should have been using.
About a 12'' group with one bullet missing the paper by a quarter of an inch.
