Wild Boar from New Zealand

Man thats one Big and mean lookin pig for sure.....
The hills (mountains) in NZ are straight up and down and that would be one well conditioned critter.
Is there a back story on this critter Gibbs505?
Thanks for sharing the photo,
Rob

I'm going to guess it is a very small truck and the lens is putting a lot of distortion on the picture ....

As for cartridges, the average American hog shooter uses his deer rifle, or shotgun with slugs. The Europeans have domestic game laws which might put a bottom on whatever they are allowed to shoot. However, they seem to like big fullbore cartridges.

An animal that size has more hard muscle than you would imagine. Good solid or expanding bullets fired at robust velocities should do the trick. There are plenty of stories of wounded swine charging the hunting stand, so whatever you choose it has to have plenty of terminal energy.

Not that I know of. The trucks are smaller in NZ certainly, but still, that is one big pig!! Bigger then most for sure!

The truck you speak of is likely a Hilux.
Similar to first generation of the toyx4 Toyota of the mid 80 to early 90's vintage.
Was curious of any back story do not doubt that it is not that big is all.
They do grow huge as been seen in the USA as well .
Thanks Again for sharing.

the OP asked what cartridge I'd use to shoot a pig like that. I'd use my .375 H&H (Ruger RSM), or 45-70 ( Marlin GG) or .35 Whelen ( Sako AV) just because I have a lot of faith and good experience with the .375 and the .35, and because i think the 45-70 is just about perfect of the at job and it needs some experience. I've shot several wild boars about a quarter that size in Germany with a 30-06. It was certainly adequate, but they are very solid animals and I respect their strength and stamina.

Well I have done a bit of pig hunting in New Zealand, bit hard to tell size, but that a big pig if its NZ, (I have my doubt's),
Guessing that's a four door Hi lux, about the size of a talcoma, guessing that's a 250 lb pig or more. Pigs are normally not shot in NZ, normally knifed, (stuck), but anything real big my be shot, the shield, (shoulder) on a pig is pure grissle, up to 3" thick, I have seen 100gr spft point .243 fail to penetrate, on a big boar.
If that's taken in NZ, its down in the south island, but I wouldn't be surprized, if that photo is from Argentina. boar's get real big down there, 400 plus lbs.

Shot lots of pigs with a 30-06 and Woodleighs , Hornadys and TSX. The first two killed quickly with a nice whoomp sound, and the TSXs worked eventually. I got lots more with a .458 Win and CEBs, A-Frames, and TSXs. Didn't seem to matter much which bullet got used there.;)

The right click properties of the image indicate a photobucket account to "SSAkiwi". No one immediately jumped to notice on a Goofle search by that name, but lots of stuff on NZ SAS regiment and zombies, as well as someone calling himself "SAKiwi" ... but "SSAkiwi" is tagged to images on photobucket and which have been posted in the 'Arrived today' forum on CGN. (He may walk among us ....)
