Bear Charge. What guns are you bringing into the bush?

Figure in the first vid the guys were lucky to be in a group and seemed to quite well prepared. Must say the second vid made me cackle when the bear took revenge on the tire. When I'm on my trapline out of season I carry a 12ga or 20ga loaded with slugs. During the season when I can't be loaded down with a long gun I carry a pistol, this year being a Norc 1911 with mods to run 45-08. At night I sleep with shotgun and pistol within easy reach since there is a very healthy population of bear in my area and I'm staying in a temporary shelter(no solid walls) til I begin construction of my new camp next spring. Either way I think if the bears and wolves really wanted a piece of me I'd be dinner.

How did you get a carry permit for the Nork 1911, in Quebec?:sok2
The MNR here in Ontario has made it very difficult.(at least in my area)

Filled out the application for carrying a pistol on a trapline. Simple enough but can only carry during the season(mid September to end of June) and have to reapply every year.

During the late 80's I flew for fly in fishing camps in Northern Ontario.
There were a lot of problems with nuisance bears in the camps.
Most of the camps were owned and used by Americans.
Being the only Ontario resident, gun owner , having a hunting license, and being able to fly to all the problem areas, I ended up being presented a nuisance bear permit by the MNR (they washed their hands of the problem)
I carried a folding stock Mossberg 590 marine on board the aircraft, loaded with SSG and slugs.
It was very effective.

I can tell you from first hand experience that you can dump all 5 shot outta a pump 30-06 into a chargin bear at 10 feet. Also 3 shots of #6 bird shot in the face will kill one chargin at 10 feet, another first hand experience. But as a trapper Otters are still the most dangerous animals in the woods unprovoked.

Have heard more than once otters pound for pound are the strongest most viscous fur bearer out there. I always stake for an elephant and make sure the trap's well swivelled. Thus far no live otters to contend with and I'd like to keep it that way.

4 times I've walked along a damn and a otter has come out of nowhere hissin, growlin, sloberin tryin to attack me totally unprovoked. I wouldn't have even known they were around if they didn't try to attack me, mean, mean critters. Everything else runs, they wanna fight.

Sxs double rifle in 45/70. It's saved my ass on 2 occasions
This year I followed up a bear in the thick stuff with my m98 458wm. It's 25" barrel proved to be a little long. 405 gr Remington flat nose at 2400 fps makes massive holes thru bears at 15'.
I still prefer my sxs. Same bullet at 1550 fps. Works great

Last week I shot a bear of over 300 lbs. when gutting it, I was amazed by how much muscle her real leg had. Wow, it was so thick! No human being can train exercise to reach half of its mass. I know if I'm fighting with it, it would be five second quick deal.

When I go back to pack out a moose by myself in Grizzly country( I live in Grizzly country), I pack my 300WM Browning BAR. :)

For years I only carried a uncle Henry knife on my hip , while out minnow trapping. I figured if worse came to worse I would offer the bear my left arm while I killed it with my right . I was all tough until a moose tried to get in a canoe with me and all I had was a broken paddle to defend myself , I thought about hitting the young bull in the balls but he finally left with me just yelling at him.. Now it's a 30-06 or a 243 or a 12 gauge.. :)
