I'm in the mood to buy one of these little guns (mostly because I want a .22 lever, and the BL-22 is a bit pricey for me at the moment) but I'd be interested to know if anyone has any views on how the basic carbine model compares with the longer-barrelled Octagon model. Are the differences purely cosmetic? or, is the action better on one than the other? (I know the sights are a little different). Thanks. :)

The regular basic carbine is quite accurate. I can't see any reason why i would want a heavier barrel on it, its lightness is nice to carry around.

Personally i also like the big loop better than the small loop, if you can try a few out to see which you like it would be best.

I have owned a dozen Henry rimfire rifles... I am down to two at the moment... they are excellent rifles... accurate and very smooth. I vastly prefer the heft and feel and accuracy of the Frontier and GB models.

I have a round barrel henry (my son found the weight of the octagonal a bit much).

It's hella fun. It's also very accurate, and it'll even run shorts. The action is smooth, and the sights are good (and steel, not plastic)

i have a golden boy i bought as an impulse buy cause it was on sale (420$) a few months ago. i HATED the rear sights so replaced with Skinner sight. Gun is crazy fun, Butter smooth action. Don't regret it one bit. Its a blast. Definitely recommend.

I've got the base model lever , even though its not an octagon barrel it's still got a nice weight to it.
I also picked this up from the EE, I always wanted a pump .22 and this doesn't disappoint. Its noticeably heavier with its octagon barrel.

I bought the base lever and its awesome. Super fun with a speed D loader. Then I picked up the mares leg and put a full length stock on it. I absolutely love that little rifle. I've been debating selling the full length one for awhile now. Just bring myself to write up the ad because I know I will miss it.

Look at the Frontier model. I have one in .22wmr with the 20" octagonal barrel. My sights were quite a bit off out of the box. That's really the only thing I have ever been disappointed with. Easily fixed. In fact, my old eyes took to a scope pretty quickly. My gun shoots just under 1moa, and I am very pleased with that.

Anyways, my experience.

I can't stop saying great things about Henrys.
I currently own 5 and one thing great about them is the no fuss customer service. Lost a front sight hood. Broke a feed tube bracket. Snapped my buckhorn on a vine in the bush.....all replaced free with just a friendly email.
As for built and accuracy...on par with everyone else I find.
I shoot them just as well againt my 39A and BL22's.
But what they have which I love the most above any other lever 22 is the.....lever action.......butter smooooooooth!

I've got the basic H001 and a few years later got a Golden Boy. For me the octagonal barrel looks a lot more classy but that's where it ends. I far and away prefer the overall lighter H001 both for the better balance from the lighter barrel as well as the lighter overall weight. Mostly it's the better balance.

Now part of that may be due to having the H001 for a few years before the GB came along. But when I've taken them out together the H001 ends up being the one that gets used the most due to the nicer balance.

This is especially true if kids or smaller and lighter folks will be shooting it. With younger ones the octagonal barrel almost tips them forward when they shoulder the gun. On the other hand my H001 was voted "bestest gun EVAR!" by the kids at my club's Jr .22 group. They've easily put 10x more ammo through my rifle than I have.

Thanks all! :) Made up my mind & this has now joined the stable...... :d
