How good/bad is the AR7?

While I do plan to get other guns, I do realize that a 22lr is good for practicing. That being said, how is the AR7 as a first gun?

I've had one for years. Has been a useful little rifle. Its a keeper. But I wouldn't recommend one as a first rifle.

I had a Henry, it had feed issues but if you held the mag tightly in place it worked just fine. Also preferred plated ammo heavier the better. Good cheek weld with a horrible sight picture. Honestly a lot of fun.

I Have shot The Armalite, Charter arms and Henry, Armalite and henry are fun novelty guns, the Charter arms is Ok but needs high power stuff to cycle properly without problems. Good collectors toys but only useful because it is compact for storage and floats. That being said I wouldn't trade mine anyways.

The Henry U.S. Survival AR-7 is a rifle of last resort. It does what it was designed to do; the inevitable compromises are down to its intended mission, weight, water resistance and price. But if you know what’s coming and when, there are better choices.

I wasn't impressed with the AR-7 I pawed at a couple years ago. Seemed awkward, flimsy. Never shot one.

For a shootable, take-down 22lr, I much preferred the Marlin Model 70 (Papoose). They are sometimes a bit hard to source in Canada for some reason, but I know at least 10 guys around here that have one and wouldn't trade it for anything. As an aside, there is some criticism of the grooves for scope mounting, but a proper one piece scope base (not just rings) solves those problems.

I went with the 795 as I didn't need a takedown. It is pretty short too, and very light weight, so you might consider it. Also ridiculously accurate out of the box.

I sold my Charter Arms AR7 at a substantial loss very soon after I bought it, and was glad to be rid of it.

Not a good choice as a first rifle, hardly a good choice as a gun to carry anywhere but buried in the survival gear bag in the back of the boat.

Go to a costume shop, rent a pair of two-foot-long clown shoes, then go out dancing in them. That kind of awkward feel to everything about the gun.

Cheers

THAT IS HILARIOUS. I think the clown shoe analogy is spot on. The least ergonomic gun in the world. Flimsy as all get out too.

I love mine.... It easily does 1" groups at 50m.
To be fair I hate the crappy stock it comes with, but hey.... Make a new one.

Had mine for 30 years now. Took a bit of feed ramp polishing, likes the hot rimfire stuff have an all steel early Armalite barrel, it is not a first gun get a 10/22, but it is a great throw in the truck gun. If stuck in the woods it is a great close range grouse gun for survival, ever try to get food by throwing rocks..........

this thread deserves a necro award.
digging up stuff from a year ago.
