Hey,

Just curious to know what people's thoughts are on Hornady brass. Although I've shot their ammo lots out of my rifles, which preformed really well, I have not had the chance to reload new Hornady brass. It seems that's all I can find for brass around. I need it for my 7mm rm and 300wm, impossible to find unless you got a source unless it's Hornady. What are your thoughts on it?

It's expensive, and because of that I've never bought any, but if it's all you can find, go for it

Yeah it is expensive, at $80 for 50. I'd prefer Winchester/federal/Remington but every where I've looked there's none. There's also nosler but it's $110/50 for the 300 and $95/50 for the 7mm, that's too rich for my blood.

I'm using Hornady for my 300 Win Mag and have been for the last 4 years, good brass, expensive but IMHO worth it.
I bought mine at Alberta Tactical in Calgary and I think they still have some, the rumor of getting Lapua brass again in that caliber hasn't become reality that I know of yet... could be wrong.

Mind me asking how many reloads you got out of the brass so far?

So far I have 8 reloads on my oldest brass, no trimming yet, but getting close. Primer pockets are still tight. Keep in mind i'm neck sizing only with Redding dies so less working the brass compared to full length.

I bought some once fired 30/06 brass off the ee for a decent price and necked it down to 25/06. Primer pockets were nice and tight, so far so good.

I've read that Hornady doesn't make all of their own brass which can account for some of the quality being all over the map. I never confirmed it so take it with a grain of salt. I mostly avoid Hornady brass because I can't find enough of it to make a full batch and it isn't common enough to warrant developing a load for specifically. I do use it still for my mixed headstamp reduced pressure cast bullet plinking loads.

.30-30 - primer pockets couldn't seat a large rifle primer no matter what I tried. I tried a large pistol primer and it went in flush which I found odd. Didn't want to deepen all the primer pockets so I tossed them in the scrap bin.
.45-70 - as stated by others, too short for normal loads. I have thought about using some in single shot rifles as the crimp isn't too important so the bullet can be seated less (for the same COAL as if the brass was full length)
.308 Win - pretty standard fare, not amazing but not terrible
.308 Win Match (the headstamp has "MATCH" on it) - was quite amazed at how consistent it was. Best brass I ever used for .308 other than Lapua. Really.
.300WM - seemed pretty good but was oddly short from the factory (.010-.020" below min trim length). Not here nor there as it'll stretch in a couple firings to make up for it.
.338 Lapua - every round stuck in the chamber of a Savage 110BA. I read more into this and Savage blames Hornady brass for being too soft, Hornady blames Savage for not polishing their chambers. Either way I believe Hornady now uses harder brass/anneals less during manufacturing for their .338 Lapua stuff. No other brands seemed to have the same tendency to stick in a Savage .338

Hornady .308 match cases have been excellent for me, 8-10 reloads so far. Have only had I cracked neck, and a half dozen loose primer pockets out of about 500 cases.

I have used it in factory loads, I have reloaded with it also.

It seems to have "odd" elastic qualities.

Extraction was feeling funny for me vs Lapua brass.

I had 200 Lapua brass and 20 Hornady that I was working and knew immediately without looking that it was a Hornady going through the sizing die.

I stick to Lapua but it may work for you.
