Before you get too excited.... It's a custom job.

The first hunting rifle I ever bought was a Vanguard Series 1 in 270. I got it for $400 on clear out at Wanstalls. Carried it my first two seasons.

I like to play around, so it's bedded in a Boyd's stock, and has a Timney trigger.

My caliber interests moved on, so I half heartedly tried to sell it, but it wouldn't move at a reasonable price. I see a lot of .270s getting bumped a lot, actually.

Right now it's getting a stainless barrel, NECG iron sights, and a Cerakote job. I'm keeping the Boyd's stock and Timney trigger, so it's going to be a little bit of an ugly duckling. :)

I'll post some pics when it comes back.

Cheers,

D

EDIT: It arrived!

It wouldn't be my choice for the caliber, but only you know what you want to do with it.... Anxious to see the end result....

Bit of an inside joke. medvedqc and I have an ongoing debate about 50mm objectives. I think they only help with high magnification in low light, and medvedqc believes they have a wider utility. I struggled to come up with a joke to make there, but I really like and respect medvedqc, so better to be safe than sorry :)

I'll probably put a VX-3 2.5-8x36 on it, though I keep thinking something with consistent eye relief might be better. Leupold's only flaw, in my opinion.

Edit: I'm actually open to suggestions about a good optic to match the rifle with. What would you use?

Cheers!

:) you hit what I would put on it with your first selection......

On another note, I notice a lot of difference between a 40mm and 50mm for transmission at first / last light..... but personally don't like the "look" and the way they feel on a rilfe.... :)

a german 4 .... or a firefly ...

i used so far on 9.3x62s zeiss 1.5-6x42, sb 1.25-4x20, bushnell 4000 and 4200 1.6-6x36, leupold m-8 3x20, bushnell elite and 4200 3-9x40, sightron S1 3-9x40 and meopta 2000 7x50.

actually i really like the ''old" sightron S1 that Prophet river had on sales they were with german 4 ....

speaking of wider utility and more real world experiences ... we have a friend in France still using a 9.3x62 with a z6 50mm for everything including battue it is a 2-12x50 i do not think i will like to have it in our mountains ... but he has that on a blaser so nobody is perfect ....

At magnifications over 6 they have a difference. Under 6 there is no difference and a 40mm kept at 6 power will be as bright as any optic can be (dependent on optical quality of course.)

Exit pupil is the key factor. If the exit pupil of the scope is bigger than your dilated pupil you are wasting the extra light of the 50mm objective.

Where did you ordered the irons from and how much did it cost you to have it installed?

The front blade is from Skinner sights. The ramp and hood are both Williams, from Brownells. The rear sight assembly is from New England Custom Gun (NECG)

To source the parts was about $200 all up. Ive had irons installed for about $175, and they threw in the giant scratch on the receiver for free.

I used a Leupold 1.5X5 on all the different 9.3s that I had and for me that was enough scope.
Maybe I'm biased but that is on all my larger rifles except my 375 Howa and it wears a Swarovski Habicht 1.5-6X42..

I like your taste.... but all is subjective.... I have seen guys in Ontario that say minimum is 4-12 when shooting at 60 yards....
