How long does a S&W 629 last? Let's find out! 13K+ now

... the quality of steel today is the ####s from what they used in the past I hope they don't use re-cycled steel that would suck to find out if they did LOL..

I rolled my eyes pretty loudly when I read this, what ridiculous comments.

The quality and consistency of steel mills today is nothing short of incredible. Whether you are buying steel out of Pittsburgh or Guandong their ability to control both major and tramp elements to the hundredth or even thousandth of a percent couldn't be dreamed of in the 1960s. And iron is the most recycled resource on earth. Gold is probably the only thing that gets formed, used, discarded, collected and remelted again with greater reliability. I don't know that it would be possible to order steel with a caveat that it had to be all virgin material. And even if you could, why? Once it's remelted and goes through the mill again steel that has been around the block a few times has performance indistinguishable from newly mined stuff. Although recycled steel does tend to have better atmospheric corrosion resistance due to the inevitable trace copper content.

Fixed it for you, and I agree 100%. A rarity on CGN, a guy that knows what he's talking about!? Novel.

Totally agree about modern steel quality, there really is no comparison to older stuff unless the maker doesn't care. There has been some awful pipe come out of China and Korea.

But back to the topic, 300 more rounds this morning for a new total of 1446. The 30.5gr of H-110 under a Sierra 180gr JHC is still very spectacular. Lotsa noise and fire.

And another 300rds tonight. 200 of the 21.5gr IMR4227 and 100 of the 23.5gr H-110, both with Campro 240gr TMJ's. And 200 more 9mm.
I must remember to take my laser thermometer to measure how hot this thing is getting because it's hot enough to scorch skin.

You've shot 1746 rds of .44 mag in a month?? Have you actually hit anything?
I have a .44 mag Winchester for 24 years and it hasn't even seen 100rds!

It seems like a lot when you put that way, but yeah I have (yay for reloading!) and I do have a 100% record of hitting the backstop.
I think of it as the worlds loudest and most expensive confetti maker

Do you let other people try your gun?
I have this mental picture of a wild haired rolly eyed guy at the end stall of an indoor range lighting off fireballs for 2 hrs in rapid succession! You either have a lot of new friends or new enemies where you shoot! LOL!

This can't be right. did you mean to say 1000 round in 24 years? otherwise it's less than 5 rounds per year? not even a full wheel?

 You have a very accurate imagination sir! Up until I got a haircut yesterday, your description was pretty much spot on. I let a bunch of different people fire the 29-10 but so far only 1 other has fired this gun. And he fired exactly 1 round. Weird thing is that he's American. The 4227 loads aren't too bad but the H-100's make ones internals jiggle and the near max lighter bullet loads are positively brutal. I have had people ask to be warned before firing them because they had a new shooter with them. Others just kinda roll their eyes and shake their heads but I get some occasional sweet looks from the ladies. Boooo-Yah!

sweet. please sent it over and I can shoot some more for you to even it out. I will supply my own ammo and won't charge you the service fee. ;)

It's a lever action Trapper model. Once it was sighted in, I didn't shoot it much. It was/is my bush gun. Carried more than fired!

As much as dirtybarry has overshot his 629, I've "undershot" my rifle!

And another 278 rounds this morning. The 4227 loads are really working well and I'm getting accuracy that used to be a distant dream!
The hotter loads are still frickin' spooky and I think one guy moved to the other gallery because of them. Sorry, dude.
2024 rounds so far and other than some discolouration, the forcing cone, barrel and cylinder look fine.
Forgot the stupid thermometer though, *sigh*, maybe next time.

What exactly is the goal of this exercise? Are you trying to actually destroy the gun, destroy your wallet, destroy the backstop or all of the above? Then you'll put the gun on the EE and say you've only had it a month and sell it for cost -10%?
i'm just envious. I know you are reloading but still, it all costs money!
I shoot quite a bit but I think I would be shell shocked if I fired >2000 rds of .44 mag in a month!

Nah, I just like shooting and still hoping that some day the bullets will go where I want.
Reloading has become a super easy routine with the only new expense being bullets and primers since I stocked up on powder in the beginning.
At 33 cents a round, sure it's still $660. But I know people that easily spend that much just on smokes for a month. Most fun stuff costs money and since the wife won't allow me hookers and blow.
No worries about selling this gun even though it's only a few months old and has only been taken out on Sundays. And a few Wednesdays. Maybe a couple of Thursdays, too.The odd Tuesday, occasional Monday.... ;)
I didn't think it would add up this fast either but maybe the claimed 5500+ rounds through the 29-10 might seem a bit more plausible?
