I have never bought an optic before and I don't even know where to start.

I think after reading a few things that holographic would be better then red dot?

I was looking at eotech and aimpoint as those seem to be the better known ones. I want something mil-spec that can take a beating and be fine. It will not be babied.

Close to medium range, maybe a bit of zoom?

500$

Where do I start?

I have eotech, I like them a lot,
I have shot aim point.... nothing wrong there.

Vortex sparc is pretty good for a budget.

Honestly, it all depends on your preference. try a few if you can at the range, or in store.

yes i did see the thread. what is wrong with those Eotechs? is it all models old and new? or just old?

Parallax issues in the cold, from what I understand it's all Eotechs, that being said I've never noticed an issue with mine but am debating sending it back.

100-300 yard target shooting. Also running a few carbine classes with it. And practicing for cqb. A bit of everything

Was originally thinking 500-1000 but now thinking 500 ish range max

I have an Aimpoint PRO and I use it from 0 to 400m day/night from -40 to +50. Its been installed and used on my personnal ARs as well as issued C8.

Battery life is +- 3 years
2MOA dot is very usable at distances

If you are spending a a lot of time at 100 plus I'd recommend a 1X6 scope over a red dot. Or if you want the best of both worlds and can spring for a bit more money check out the Burris MTAC it has both a 1X4 scope and a red dot. I like mine.

I have the vortex spitfire 3x etched red/green dot which is great, but better for closer quarters than 100 I find. fDC is right, you could also look into the bushnell AR series that have various magnifications. I have the 3-9x40 that cost in the low $200's and holds up great for the price and gets the job done at 100. Pair any of those with a Burris PEPR mount ( qd I pefer) and you still won't go over the $500 mark!

With those criteria, I would recommend an Aimpoint PRO. The 2 MOA dot is daylight visible, easily adjustable, will last you at least three years constantly on at a medium setting. The dot is small enough to be used out to 300 meters, and good for anything closer. It has a build quality superior to any of the clones. Can be used with a magnifier, if required.

If you have the money, why buy something cheaper? Buy the best you can buy within your budget. I know of one Aimpoint that was used for demonstrations, that was detached from a rifle, thrown downrange 1000 times and returned to the rifle, and worked every time. It was only retired because the person using it decided to replace it with a new demo model, and run it on his personal gun.

You could look at a variable, but many of the cheaper variables, like the AR series, are not a true 1x, which can be a little distracting in certain circumstances. they also don't have the eye relief of the Aimpoint, or the FOV, and at anything over 1x, are difficult to use with both eyes open. The Aimpoint will work better close in and for "cqb", but is still usable for practical purposes at a few hundred meters.

Regards.
