I was very lucky to get my hands on a Smith & Wesson Model 46, a rare find. The Model 46 was manufactured between 1957 and 1966 with only 4000 being made. Back then, it was introduced as the poor man's version of the Model 41. Of the 4000 manufactured, only 2500 where 7 inch barrels, 1000 where 5 inch barrels and apparently 500 where 5.5 inch barrels. The vast majority of the 7 inch version were sold to the US Air Force for marksmanship training purposes with only a few available to the general public. The serial number of my gun is a very early one indicating that it was manufactured some time in 1958. The pistol is over 55 years old and it is, from my point of view, in excellent condition for it's age.

It looks very similar to my 1971 41 but with a longer barrel. how does it shoot?
Mine is a tack driver even at it's age it's one of my favorites.

As an update, the Model 46, as I stated in my initial post above, was introduced along with the Model 41 in 1957. It was a cheaper version of the Model 41 in that it's finish wasn't as nice as the Model 41 with no rounded edges and other refinements etc. etc. It was dropped from production in 1966 as it didn't sell well at all. When you consider that only 4000 where made over a 9 year period, it's easy to understand why S&W dropped it from their catalog.

Nice looking pistol; hope I look that good at 55! Did you find it in Canada or USA?

I bought it from a small local dealer in Ontario who isn't involved in anyway with CGN. You'd be surprised what you can find at these small out of the way dealers. That's why I surf around the internet looking for that unusual rare item that I would like to be part of my collection.

Your lucky as I used to own a Model 41 that I had bought back in the early 70s but later sold. That was one of my biggest mistakes as the 41s manufactured back then where superbly made by S&W.
