Trouble hitting 8x11 paper at 100 yards!

I take that "new to you" means a used rifle correct? Have you checked the crown to make sure it is not damaged? How many rounds have been through this rifle? Previous owner may have shot out that barrel?

A zeiss scope with that much inconsistency leads me to believe that it isnt the rig, its you. Unless of course you have cheap mounts and rings that are improperly mounted.

My Zeiss died after 8 months on my Swiss 7.5x55 - wouldn't hold zero and was all over the map. Zeiss replaced it, but I still haven't mounted it 'cuz if it died once with the recoil, it likely will again.

I have a hard time believing an 8 moa group at 100 yards or larger is 100% shooter related.... I'm concerned something is loose or broken on the rifle and or scope.

Seeing how the rifle is previously loved, and you are not at the range, I'd disassemble the rifle, re-torque all of the screws (rails screws, action screws, scope rings, absolutely everything) and do as complete a cleaning as I was capable of doing. then I'd go to the range with a buddy and have us both fire off some groups and see what, if anything changed between him and I.

What's the deal with the scope? is it known good? can it be mounted to another rifle for testing purposes?
Did the previous owner supply the rifle and scope? or just the rifle? Maybe I missed it, what is the scope?

That pretty much covers it ..

Used rifle, with supposed low shot count. And a new scope that did not come in a box, nor with manuals. It was supposed to be a display model. It is a 6.5-20x 50mm conquest MC, with a Rapid Z reticle.

I will pull the stock off of it this weekend and have a look inside. Not sure what a crown is, I will have to Google that.

I have a hard time believing that a 7mmRM recoil is too heavy for a conquest scope, but il keep it out of the lead sled anyway. So far I've only put 60 shots downrange, box and a half, cleaned it, and then another box and a half.

Did someone else tried it, before undoing anything, the crown is the mouth of the barrel, it should be perfect, no dents, no scratchs... JP.

No one else has shot it, no. Hasnt been out of the safe since. I'm confident that I can disassemble it without wrecking anything....however , I would like to f.ck with the trigger while I got it apart....

Can a stock savage trigger be adjusted? Or is that trigger creep a factory issue on any savage without the accutrigger?

Unless the crown is really screwed up, like half of it missing, a scratch or ding won't give you 8" groups at 100yds.

I'm guessing it's the scope.

Forget the trigger work for now and concentrate on the other items in the list..you can always do it later, don't get multiple problems going at the same time if you can help it

Barrel crown looks good. Lightly scuffed, but nothing concerning. Nothing loose internally. Only thing I don't like is that the bed of the stock, right at the front of the action, looks like someone shaved it down with a jacknife! Chunks missing, and plastic shavings floating around inside of the stock. But this is directly before the barrel threads, so i don't think it's a huge issue...

I will wash it all clean and reassemble. Pretty dirty here inside the stock.

Go to the range with your buddy that are used to the heavy recoil, and shoot at closer distance. Let your friend shoot too, just to isolate variables...
The stock scratches are nothing to do with the accuracy, until they are in the "free float" barrel area.
The trigger will make you miss maybe two MOA at it's worst, the "recoil fear" will make you miss the paper... IMO.
Nothing here inteded to hit you personally, you have to go through the learning curve, and that is normal... I have a 30-06 (no big super recoil here!) and if I didn't shoot it for couples months, I shoot 10 rounds before looking at my results just to get used to the recoil and the trigger moment. I've learned from time that I tend to anticipate the BANG and that make my groups bad. So I now know myself...
So experience is everything, and it's a forum here, made for sharing experiences and knowledge, you're at the good place :)

Yeah, even with the gouges, and what appears to be 1/16th of an inch of plastic shaved away under the chamber, there is no noticeable play once reassembled.

I gave the trigger wire 1/2 turn lighter and some lube, and it's ready for more testing. I didn't realize these triggers were adjustable, I've only seen Axis, and Accu triggers before, not even sure what this one is called, but a few Google searches found the info I needed.

go to the range , bore site it , fire it , bore site again to see if anything has moved. If it has shifted, its the scope ,if it still looks like it should hit, its most likely the gun or the shooter. check by bore siting between shots and you should have no problem figuring it out. simple

You say the scope is "a new scope that did not come in a box, nor with manuals. It was supposed to be a display model. It is a 6.5-20x 50mm conquest MC, with a Rapid Z reticle".
This model is one of the scopes that is copied and cloned by the Chinese. Check the Zeiss website for the full list of models copied. Make sure that you did not get a clone scope for the price of a genuine one. These Zeiss clones came to my attention when researching a nib Zeiss Conquest listed locally on Craigslist for $500. I did some research and wanted to see it, my phone calls went to voicemail and my e-mails went unanswered. They pulled the add after 12 hours, either I missed a smoking deal OR they found a sucker OR they got nervous and pulled out.
These scopes from China can look very realistic in every detail even the packaging. I would like to handle one to see and feel the differences from a real Zeiss. I have a Leupold clone that has a few visual differences from it's genuine progenitor but when you turn the turrets or look closely through the lens it becomes obvious.

Best of luck in solving your problem......... 270 totheend
