Opinions on Ruger American , Savage 11 or Axis

Im looking to get a bolt gun for deer and moose and like so many others im on a budget.
So im looking for opinions one some of the entry level 308 rifles.
Locally i have the Ruger American, Savage Axis, Savage 11 available.

As a previous owner of a Rem 700 and Browning A bolt its hard to pick from the cheaper ones.
 
On a budget the American or model 11 will give you a decent platform and both will likely be accurate. I personally wouldn't recommend an Axis there's such a thing as too cheap IMO and the other two are as close to that as I'd want, the Axis is..
 
I i had my way i would be looking at a Ruger Scout or Mossberg MVP with the Savage Hog Hunter trailing.Hope to get some hands on time tomorrow with the American and Axis. The Axis is not what i want but its in my price range...
 
ive got a axis and a ruger american so i can only speak to those 2 but the american wins hands down.
like its been said above, there is such a thing as too cheap.
in all honesty i purchased my axis a couple years ago with that scope deal, took it to the range and sited it in then put it in the safe and it hasnt moved in years.
the american i just got last year and i like it, ive been tweaking it and playing with it and i must admit i enjoy shooting it.
its nothing compared to my Ruger Scout or my Browning but its less then half of what i paid for those so its to be expected.

try the american, it wont disappoint.

Get a better used rifle on EE for same as all of those.
 
I like the American even though the mag is kinda cheap. Some of the other suggestions on here are great but weight wise I wouldn't be hiking around with the mvp (have one for sale actually).
 
Exactly how my model 11 in 223 was, stupid accurate. We smeared raviolli on a target at 100 yards and let flies land on it. On 24x zoom you could pop them no problem. Great guns for the money and miles ahead of an axis. I don't think an axis really competes with either IMO.

Yea this is at 100M with the crappy 3x9 that came with it... With a good optic it would be terrifying what you could do.
 
For the few extra bucks the model 11 is "more value for the money" than either the American or the Axis.

If you are even still considering an Axis then I will throw a Rem 783 into the mix to consider. Every bit as accurate as the Axis (and they are accurate) but have a far superior trigger - and the 783's are priced as cheap or cheaper than the Axis.
 
I've got a 783 in 308 win, an axis SS (Boyds & Timney) in 7mm-08, and a Savage 111 (Timney) in 300WM...all are good accurate reliable rifles....don't really think you will go wrong with any of your choices. Myself, I'd go Savage model11.

If you're going either of the savages, you might as well get the model with the accu-trigger and for sure go stainless steel. :)

I love my axis, without the accutrigger. $5 for a screw and a spring and the trigger is way better now.

Besides, for the additional cost of an accutrigger you can put an after market trigger into a regular axis.
 
Definitely don't count out the Weatherby Vanguard, every so often you can catch them on sale and great a great deal. They are a great rifle and extremely accurate.
