I am looking for my wife a Semi Automatic 9mm hand gun with the least amount of recoil. We have a number of .22's and I would like to get her into shooting 9mm. I don't have a big budget. I am hoping in the 500 dollar range
I have a M&P core and it still a little too much for her.
Any suggestions on what we should try?

My daughter loves to shoot my IWI Baby Eagle 9mm. Otherwise she shoots something in 22lr.

Any of the heavier full metal frame semi's; also look at using 147 grain factory ammo - I find they shoot softer than the lighter, snappier 124 and 115 grain options. If you reload, it's relatively easy to tune for a light, "rabbit-fart" load.

A used CZ75, like an omega, would fit the bill. Heavier steel gun and reasonably small grip should work well with your wife.

You need to make some light loads that are strong enough to cycle the slide. I have made some 105 PF loads that worked fine in my M&P Pro CORE and a few of the other 9s I have. They are about as soft as you can go before the slide has issues. You may find you need to experiment with recoil springs as you go lighter. You could even mill the slide to reduce its weight! Grip technique will also help with muzzle rise and confidence.

+1 on baby eagle
also check the used gun in EE for sig226 cz75 or 85 and 1911 in 9mm

all metal gun will tame a bit the recoil and like Cazyjackrabbit says ''If possible, it would be best if she was able to shoot some other club members firearms to try.''

I was thinking the same thing. I picked up a used CZ 75 B Ω on the EE for close to $500 two years ago. Everyone that handles these guns loves the ergonomics of them, as well as their shootability. Colonel Jeff Cooper said that the CZ 75 would be the only 9mm he would consider owning. I consider them one of the most under-rated hand guns of all time. Unfortunately for me, I traded mine for a P220 and shortly there after got out of 9mm all together. The CZ 75 B ranks just below the Browning Highpower and P229 that I owned. All of them were great pistols. Have a gander at this write-up:

My suggestion would be a 1911 chambered in 9mm if light recoil is desired

Yes, this. The heavier the gun the lower the perceived recoil due to inertia. Also, light loads would help. Most re-man ammo is loaded pretty light compared to new factory.
But all that aside, if she can't handle the vicious recoil of a 9mm, a 22LR might be a better choice.

Other then what has already been suggested, you could get a threaded barrel for your pistol and try a compensator, or find an inexpensive 9mm that comes with a threaded barrel and get a compensator.

Does she want more recoil then a .22, or do you want to buy another 9mm? :)

The ladies I've been around that were sensitive to recoil also found that the heavier guns needed to absorb that recoil were too heavy to hold out at arms length easily. So you will likely fix one problem but end up with another instead.

One option I've seen is that where they found a 9mm to be too snappy and didn't like dodging the hot brass they all quite enjoyed .38Spl from a revolver. And a S&W K frame gun is quite slim and light which worked for holding it out at arms length as well.

Hmmm.... I think Can-Down might be onto something here :d

My lightest recoiling 9mm is a 1911, but is heavy.

Can you make mild handholds? That is what I give my wife and daughter to shoot in light 9mms..

And I agree a 38 Revolver (excellent trigger) with wadcutters might be the most satisfying for the lady.

I'm surprised by this. I've seen a 13 year old girl complete her Black Badge with an M&P. Perhaps just more training/time behind the gun is needed? Is she of really small stature or is it just psychological?

as many have said before, the heavier the gun, less recoil will be felt. I've never been a fan of anything polymer, I tend to be drawn to anything that's full stainless construction.

How is your wife's grip and hand positions? When shooting a .22 you can have a poor grip and still accommodate the light recoil. Not the case when shooting a 9mm. A correctly sized grip (backstrap) + correctly positioned hands, locked wrists, forward thumbs will do wonders to tame 9mm recoil.

I've shot a lot of 9mm pistols but my softest shooting so far is my Beretta 92FS. Very little recoil with any ammo. Only bad thing is that it's not small hand friendly for a girl.
