Try googling it with your wife...there are all kinds you can print out.
I do dot drills at 50m with my 22. Last time after finishing the card, I'd attempt to hit the staple. Pretty good kicks when you hit the staple every other shot or every shot after a couple cards.
Oranges, Tangerines, Clementines, that sort of fruit (bio degradable, yes?)
I have a set of floor hockey pucks and balls from Wallmart, made of foam. The balls are about 2" dia, hard foam that will take dozen of hits and have bright colors.
Post-it notes tacked to trees.

I have the bottom one and it is a lot of fun but we shoot golf balls and the metal flipping ground hog targets more. I got my metal flipper from a member on here, quentin wipf, maybe give him a PM and see if he is still making them.
You can get auto reset targets (and other varieties) from princess auto for way cheaper. $15-25 depending which one you want.
Full pop cans, give them a shake before you set them down.
Canadian Tire has some "firebird" reactive targets they make a nice flash and puff of smoke when they are hit.
I would avoid the rimfire binary targets for a first time shooter. The bang might be a little too much for them, unless they are into that sort of thing.

Those cheap diamond pop up targets are actually quite fun, I got one with about 800 shots into it and its still holding up just fine. You just have to give them a fresh coat of paint every so often.
I make my own "splattering" (aka: shoot-n-c or dirty bird) targets using this method:

Of course you can make them as simple or fancy as you want by cutting into different shapes, overlaying rings on them to aim at, etc. For pistol, I make human-shaped silhouettes using large Bristol-board. Repaint it again and again for multiple uses.
