Hi,

I have a new rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor sitting in my room and I cannot do anything with it :(

I can't find brass or loaded ammo anywhere... Been out of stock in every store that I've looked into since december. Nobody knows when and if they will receive some...

Does anyone knows why there is such a shortage and when the expected date to order them should be ?

I'm starting to think of making my own brass but would prefer to purchase the brass new... I have everything else (bullet, dies, primers, powder)... But no brass :(

Thanks

This is my last resort... I would prefer already formed brass as I never resized anything yet. Been Reloading for a couple of months only...

I will try to find a step by step (for dummies video) about doing it ;)

It's just weird that brass and ammo are out of stock and no one knows when they'll receive some...

Grouse River has Hornady Superformance in stock - 120 grain GMX or 129 grain SST.

The parent case is a 30 Thompson Center, might be a bit of fiddling to use a 308 or 243 case.

I got some Hornady brass from Wholesale Sports not too long ago. Got my Berger 6.5mm hybrids from Mystic Precision. As well I got some PVRI 22-250 brass from Mystic and fire formed them this morning.

I bet the popularity of the Ruger Precision Rifle has a lot to do with the scarcity of ammo and components.

I tried Wholesale Sports and they are out of stock also...

If the Ruger Precision is the Culprit, I am part of the problem lol ;) This is the rifle for which I'm desesperatly looking for brass lol ;)

Grouse River still has 2 box in stock, but they are really expensive :( 58$/20 rounds + shipping...

Hoping to find some brass somewhere otherwise I'll just resize some 22-250

Been through the same ordeal....two provinces and nada!

I've been fire forming 22-250 brass but been having an issue with a ridge on the inside bottom of the neck when doing so.....good luck on your quest.

Its pretty phucking retarded when distributors bring in rifles and don't have the smarts to make sure there is a supply of ammo or components to go with it. :(

Buy these before somebody else does.

Made a few edits based on Jerry's comments. This is what I was using this morning for a Ruger Precision Rifle 6.5 Creedmoor and I got great results. The brass was PVRI 22-250 Remington (nice brass!) ordered from Mystic Precision (I think it was around $48/100). I created a test group of 4 rounds ranging from 4.5 grains to 6 grains of Titegroup, best results were with 5 grains. I got this from Pete:

1 - Use the cheapest primers you can find
2 - Use 5.0 grains of Titegroup powder; start lower and work up (start at 4.5 and go to 6.0)
3 - Fill case to the top of neck with cow
4 - Take a 1/4 piece of Toilet paper, make it into a ball, and compress it into the neck. This will seal the cow in the case.
5 - Transport casings standing up
6 - Make sure they don’t get wet! THIS WOULD BE REALLY BAD.
7 - Watch for Cow entering the chamber as it seems to show up when you least expect it. Good idea to take a cleaning kit with you to fire form. Cow will show up as dimples on the FF case...and chamber should be cleaned if this occurs
8 - Watch your barrel temperature as it can get up there when you are doing a lot of FF.
9 - Clean your barrel before firing live rounds
10 - trim case to length if needed, debur & clean primer pocket, turn neck if needed

I feel the pain. Work part time at a major box store, and the most we had come in within the last six months was a wopping 3 boxes (60 rnds). Now i know things are slow, but this is the time of year stuff should be flowing in, and....its just not. There is lots of the usual stuff, common calibers, .22's, skeet loads, but any of the higher demand stuff, 45-70, 6.5 crm, 303 brit, 22-250, just isnt coming. Ive seen order sheets, and there is demand for the stuff, its on purchase orders, but just isnt showing up..

At this time last year, wasn't 6.5 creedmoor readily available? What happened? It can't be because of just one rifle can it?

Get some Lapua 22-250 brass and follow the instructions in the link above, a friend at work did it this way and his brass turned out great, no loss what so ever. That is the only way I would run a 6.5 Creedmore.

3 - I place 1/8 sheet of toilet paper over the powder charge to separate it from the cream of wheat (cow). You will need to determine the appropriate powder charge for you components.
4 - Fill case to the top of neck with cow
5 - Place case in a shell holder to prevent primer contacting a source of ignition . The using a rod compress the Cow into the case down to the shoulder level.
6 - Take a 1/4 piece of Toilet paper and compress it into the neck. This will seal the cow in the case.
7 - Transport casings standing up
8 - Make sure they don’t get wet! THIS WOULD BE REALLY BAD.
9 - Wipe case with a rag that is slightly oiled before placing in chamber. Rag should feel waxy not wet. The lubricant will aid in brass flow to the new shape.
10 - Watch for Cow entering the chamber as it seems to show up when you least expect it. Good idea to take a cleaning kit with you to fire form. Cow will show up as dimples on the FF case...and chamber should be cleaned if this occurs

If I can offer a couple of suggestions:

I don't put anything between powder and cornmeal... just keep the case vertical and pour in slowly. No issues

I fill cornmeal to the base of the neck... NO COMPRESSION IS NEEDED NOR DESIRED. You want to avoid any chance of turning that cornmeal into a solid.

I just put the cases into case tray... simple.

A small ball of TP stuffed into the neck and gently tap down so all is held in place and nothing can pour out.

I would strongly advise AGAINST lubing the case. There is plenty of energy to form the case IF the headspace is set properly for the chambered case. Although a mild pressure, there is still a fair amount of force and the last thing I want is to increase this unnecessarily.

Do swab the bore and chamber often... you will know if any cornmeal is left or blown back as there will be dimples on your case.

The key is setting the headspace of the parent case so it is snug in the chamber and bolt face when chambered. This is why this method works so well as there is little to no chance to strain the web area of the case and the shoulder is moved to locate headspace properly for future loading.

DO NOT try and load until the shoulder is sharp... you are really hot. The shoulder will form but be slightly rounded.. this is proper. With this method, you can go from low to super high pressures with little change in powder charge so be real careful and err on the lower side.

Works great and very simple to do. Once you see how well it forms cases, it will be the first firing of every new case even if forming is not necessary.

Good stuff.

Just be careful...

Jerry, I've been using 18gr of HP3 to fire form my 22-250 Lapua cases....it leaves a nicely formed shoulder but I end up with an interior bump or donut on the inside bottom of the neck. I can load 140 VLD's long enough to just miss seating onto the bump.

I've ordered a 6.5 pilot reamer to remove this inside bump so hoping that will work....any Ideas? Thanks

JASON AT THE OUTDOORSMAN IN MEDICINE HAT HAS LOTS OF Hornadys new 6.5 ELD bullets in stock. But no brass yet

Sometimes it pays to get off the internet or get out of the truck when you're passing through those small towns. I just found the motherload of 6.5, and for probably the best price I've seen in Canada! And they have lots! I shoot 129 and there must be 3 cases of it :)
