Hello
What is more practical on a scout rifle setup? A fixed 4x scope or a 2-7x variable scope?

How far out can the average hunter safely shoot game with a 4x scope and comparably with a 7x scope?
Thx!

The extra magnification is helpful for precise long shots sometimes. My longest kill was a non-typical whitetail buck at a measured 290 yards with a Savage Scout topped with a Burris 2-7x Scout Scope.

I was lucky to have good rest and near perfect lighting conditions, and the Burris glass is excellent. The tiny view 10 inches from your face is a hindrance for those shots where you need to hit the vitals, and not just ring a gong.

It's either forward of the receiver at 8.5-10 inch eye relief or I was thinking over the reciever and 5-5.5 inch eye relief.
Not sure which one. It would be on higher rings so over the receiver seems alright ( as long as it clears the peep sight and doesn't cause ejection issues.

The other post was concerning brands and this is concerning magnification for hunting and such. I did reference that tho so thanks.

Problem with trying to mount an EER scope that close is, you won't be able to see through it properly. It needs to be 10 inches from your face or you will have a huge black halo around the image. If you can pick up a scout scope and hold it close you will see what i mean (can't think of the proper term ATM).

An IER scope might work for that application, such as the Bushnell shotgun scope.

Mounting it forward of the receiver, 2.5x.
A "scout" rifle by definition would have the scope forward, that is if you go by Jeff Coopers example.

A fixed scope is probably more practical for the op's "scout" rifle

what rifle? does it have a mount forward of the receiver already?

That's why I mentioned both options...... The FOV gets really small with anything over 4x on a LER scope.

I run it over the receiver, or a red dot on the rail.

Just pick a scope already so you can shoot this rifle. I don't see the point of starting another topic about scout scopes when you already started one asking the same question.

Don't give him any else to think. Now he be asking about regular scopes and 3 thread about that.

Who are you? The thread starting Natzi?

NO SCOPE FOR YOU!

My rifles rail comes forward of the receiver. One scope I found has more length to it. so I'm thinking there could be an option to mount it as far back on the rail as possible which will bring it mostly over the reciever and 5.5 inch eye relief might be ok then.

You need over 8" eye relief. The scope you see with 5" or more is for magnum cal rifles, so you don't get scope eye.

If you dont got enough eye relief than you be looking at a smaller FOV with a black rings around it. You might comp by offset rings but that be another purchase you would need to make. You got a scout rifle and your set on using see thru, than use a 8-10" eye relief scope.

I am leaning towards that (8.5-10"), I just saw a longer 4x scope and wondered if I had another option, like i described.

Anyone have insight on rang of shot on large game with 4x mag and 7x mag?
4x - 100-200 yards?
7x -150-300 yards?
( just an ignorant guess)

If you only have a mount forward of the receiver, your only option is scopes designed for that type of mounting
