Hi all,
I'm part of a group of entrepreneurs with the University of Alberta that are looking to make and sell firearms that are replicated from video games. We're looking to get an idea of what the market size is. If we build the rifle pictured below and were able to sell it for approximately $1200.00 would anyone buy it?

Key points:
- It will be well built to feel very solid
- Very little plastic will be used, the gun is meant to feel heavy
- Size will be similar to an AR-15 with a larger frame
- The rifle will include a full length detachable stock
- Caliber will be 223
- The chain saw will work! You won't really be able to cut anything with it, but it will make noise and spin

P.S.
Anyone know the legal process around becoming a manufacturer of firearms in Alberta?

I don't have an answer for you, because it really doesn't interest me. But.....the U. of A.?

I really think that a group from there would be the last people on earth who be interested in this type of thing.

Sorry James, but not even a little interested. To be honest I think a sturdy well built replica that isn't a firearm would probably give you a higher profit margin.

Hey man, Alberta loves guns!

I don't think you'll be able to hit that price point, but if I had the cash floating around and it was non restricted I would like one.

Airsoft makes tons of them no market in Canada, China has a small one.

Keep in mind you have to get the licensing agreements in place to produce a likeness of copy writed material.

+ one to the guy who says just build a high quality rifle at a fair price and there is tons of market for that. Also you live in Canada good luck getting that approved anywhere!!! Gas and Black powder, hmmm now where can I find an ignition source??? Lol sorry but U of A? Might want to start copying off the kid next to you.

Try designing a semi auto black rifle that takes ar mags that is non restricted and accurate/reliable. Price it at $1000 and they will sell. I can't speak for everyone but I would not be interested in the pictures rifle.

I would buy a version of the assault rifle from Halo. That being said, why you don't you make copies of firearms that are unavailable (but not named prohibs) like the L85? Maybe the Iranian KH2002? Maybe theres trademarks and copyrights etc. but a not restricted L85 would do quite well I think.

Yeah. Second here.
OP, you aren't going to sell more than 2 or 3 of those at that price in this country. There's two rich guys on this forum that like to buy every single new firearm in Canada and then gloat about it on this sight but them aside, there wouldn't be much of a market.

Start with the AR180b design, modify it slightly so it doesn't infringe copyright.
Keep it light, simple, out of stamped metal to keep costs down, take AR mags, under 3 MOA accuracy (again see the AR180b) and around the $1K mark and you would be rolling in money.
You would have my cash in 10 minutes.

The rifles in that game were never really second cool items... Something like the HALO series... alien rifles... they would do much better....

That said, the hurdles to make gun in canada.. while not impossible... are very difficult.

If you could make a .223 or 7.62/39 firing action... and it would be universal between a few popular "shells" you might have a good thing going.
Even a setup based around VZ58 (.223/7.62) or sks action...

I know this is a troll thread, but I still think working replicas of the BR55, MA5, M395, or M90 from Halo would be doable, albeit with some minor design and caliber changes.

There would only be a market if it were airsoft and under $500.

If you could make the Halo Reach MA37 assault rifle, THAT I'd pay money for.

The rifle makes no sense mechanically as a firearm, but it is dead ###y!
