Ive decided to build a new Long Range Rig, Currently Im on a 6.5 MM kick, so The 2 cartridges Ive narrowed it down to is a 6.5 x284 and a 6.5 x 47 Lapua. Im thinking of going with a mcmillan A-5 stock and a 30 inch 1 in 8 twist barrel. The trigger will likely be a timney calvin elite. What I cant decide on is an action. Im not sure If I should start with a Remington 700 or 7 action ( have both on hand) or go with a custom repeater action? Any advice from someone with experience with custom LR builds would be apriciated.

Couple of things: #1 unless you have a major need for 6.5-284 I'd go with 6.5x47 or .260 or something as the 6.5-284 is a real barrel burner ( I own one and it is great but barrels are not gonna last). Now, #2, with respect to the specific question: a perfectly excellent rifle can be built off a Rem 700 and I currently have ATRS and North Shore Barrels customs built off Rem 700 and as far as accuracy is concerned a properly trued up R700 attached to a custom pipe will be as accurate as anything out there. What a custom gives is a higher level of finish and smoothness as well as a certain pride of ownership. I have had customs built off - Defiance, Stiller, RPA, Barnard P and S and Swing ( yes, that old guy) as well as PGW ( yes, factory rifles but I will call them semi-custom).

What I'd do were I you is decide what kind of rifle you want (F-Class/PRS/LR on Crown/whatever) as, for example, a Barnard may well better suit a F Class whereas for example a Surgeon 591 would be the route for a more tactical rig. Then talk to a good gunsmith - there are many to choose from - and take some advice from them.

6.5-47 would be my choice out of the two, I have both and both shoot really well but the 6.5-47 is a little more forgiving and a lot easier on barrels also easier to get a good seating depth from a short action. The 6.5-284 is better built on a long action I find.

Why not 6.5X55? Good barrel life, decent velocity, high quality brass is available (lapua), and you can seat the bullets way out there (the Swede is a mid-length cartridge but when run out of a long action you have loads of room).

I would say though if/when I do my next build it would be a 6.5X47.

For what it is worth I would just use the M700 action. You already have it and unlike what everyone says it is not cheaper to just but a Definace/Surgeon/etc. than to have that Rem trued up (source - I had it done). This is especially true considering the dollar.

Ive done the 6.5x55 thing already, I worked out well so I dont want to build the identical rifle again

not quite sure what you're saying... there's a new custom action being made in Alberta or some gunsmith has one action to sell?

Jefferson posted last night that he has inside knowledge of an AB based custom shop unveiling their own custom action.....

I have no freakin' clue what he's talking about, but he's been in the game for a very good long while and is a trustworthy and connected dude......
