308 Bolt Action Build!! The Beginning!

Will be mounting a sightron 6-24x50 on this fella.
Planning to shoot up to and over 1000 yards with it.....basically want to shoot as far as my abilities will let me.
Wondering what taper I should get on my scope base (20MOA, 15MOA, etc...).
Any words of wisdom?

A .308 will top out at 1200, maybe 1400.... I have a 20MOA on mine and it'll allow me to dial for 1000 no problem. It is possible to have too much rail, and then you can't get your 100yd zero....

Your abilities will grow as far as you push them!!!

All depends on how many moa adjustment the scope has to! You might need 40 moa cant on a scope with low elevation adjustment like 45-65 , but you might be fine with a 20 moa with a scope with 100 moa adjustment.

Like so:
Burris fullfeild2 6.5-20×50 has 30 moa total elevation adjustment.

Nightforce NXS 5.5-22×50 has 100 moa total elevation adjustment.

From what I can see that Sightron scope has 50MOA of adjustment (it's not clear on the Sightron website...)

So, you have 25 up and 25 down, assuming your more or less zeroed when at 25MOA "up".

My ballistics chart says I need about 31MOA to get to 1000, and 50MOA to get to 1300.

A 20MOA rail will get you 45MOA of dialing up. (25 in the scope plus 20 in the rail), and leave you 5MOA of dialing down 25MOA in the scope munis 20 in the rail) which should be ok to allow you to zero at 100yds. If you go to a 30MOA rail then you have -5MOA of down dialing ability - which doesn't exist in this dimension, so unless you know Sheldon Cooper, you're hosed.

I'd give up on anything past 1000 with a .308. You're subsonic at 1200, and then it all goes to hell.

If you get a boomer that's good to WAAAYY out there, you'll need a scope with more adjustment, likely in a 34mm tube.

Another update!
Just got the word from my fella down in the states....he finish making my fluted, 20moa Talley lightweight rings cerakoted in Milspec Green. They should be here within the next few weeks.

Also purchased a Sightron 6-24x50 FFP scope. It does have a rattle can tan paint job on it, but I am planning on getting a professional coat done on it.

The rifle is currently being bedded into the Mcmillan A1-3....should have it all together by next week!
Taking suggestions for what cerakote/gunkote pattern to go with...

I'd go old school army camo, od green, black ,dark earth. I love the mcmillan stocks in that pattern. Great list of parts for a great build, git er done!!

Hey guys!
Just got the rifle back form the gunsmith!
All looks great...especially the muzzle brake! Looks like it grew on the barrel!

One Issue that I will ask the CGN crowd for advice on is the clearance between my objective lense and the barrel.
It is really tight...like tight like a tiger tight....

Do you guys think this is enough space?

Still waiting on my Javelin Bipod! Should be here this week.
Next up is the Cerakote Finish...stay tuned!

Ben

Any advice on the scope/shank spacing?

Not 100% sure if being that close will cause any problems or not I wouldn't thing so, but me myself I prefer at least enough room to run a sunshade and cover with a 20moa rail or rings.

Very nice looking rifle though, looking good that's for sure.

That is awfully close to the barrel. Even a bull barrel vibrates when a shot is fired. It may just touch the objective and cause problems when fired. Here's a sample of what happens to a barrel when a shot is fired and yes, I know it's not a bull barrel but it's a good indication how much a barrel can vibrate when a shot is fired:

Great looking build !

But gotta say I don't understand the light weight Talley rings on a rifle of this type.

Personally I'd throw some Badger rings & base on there. Much more suited to this rifle imo.
