Seriously thinking about new rifle in 6.5
6.5Creed. 6.5-284 Norma, 6.5x55 Swede all kind of fall aside when set my sights on .260 Rem.
Would like to hear pros and cons,yeah or nay sayers...
Planning to get lightweight rifle,probably Sako Carbonlight in this cal.
Will use, hopefully,for mountain hunting but deer size critters will most likely be 90% of the purpose...
 
In a hunting rifle any of those calibers would suit you equally well.

If you think the 260 Rem will work voodoo for you, then go for it.

Except on paper you probably wouldn't see any difference in "real life" between the various rounds you note.

I wanted "something 6.5" - I had it down to the Creed and the 260 - the Creed came into stock first, so it won - wasn't more complicated than that for me...
 
My first choice for that application would be the 260rem, followed by the 6.5x55. The 260 is available in a short action, the 6.5x55 offeres slightly better ballistics if both are loaded to similar pressure. Lapua also makes brass for both, but not for the Creedmoor, so the Creedmoor would be my last choice after the 260rem, 6.5x55, and the 6.5x47L.
 
I have had all of those and liked them all... flip a coin. When I downsized, I bailed on all of the 6.5's... I jump from .257 to 7mm now.
 
Debated long btw 6.5CM and 260 (Ruger PR or T3 CTR). Ended up with CTR 260 for Lapua brass and can neck up/down 243/308 brass.
 
I hummed and hawed CM vs .260 for my Modern Hunter.

Went with .260 cause of the lapua brass.

In a bolt gun I'd look real hard at a 6.5x47.

At the end of the day, they'll all hit the boiler room of a deer at 500yds.....
 
I had a .260 in an early 700 Ti when they first came out and now have had a 6.5 Creedmoor in a lightweight Howa Alpine.
And after using both I'd never go back to a .260..

Yeah I remember you selling off a whole bunch of your collection and I can't say that I blame you for doing what you did. I love playing with different rifles and cartridges as much as the next guy but you're right. Having a great many rifles that essentially do the same thing doesn't make a lot of sense from a practical standpoint. I too have pared down to what I deem are my "essentials" and won't be deviating from that path anytime soon. :cheers:

You & Hoytcanon are only serving to hurt my feelings with your dialogue:p. I;) 'need' more than a .22, an '06 and a 12ga.
 
I love the .260 Rem, for all the reasons listed above. Fantastic SD, easy on the recoil, Lapua brass, never fired one that wasn't accurate, the list goes on. And it makes all the more sense if you're thinking of a small light rifle like the Sako you mentioned.
 
Almost 99% due to Lapua brass. Too much work to neck down 308, no freebies with 243.
Done full brass prep with Hornady match and reg brass. Lapua were way more consistent.



I find it sad abandoning all the safe queens as the same few teacher's pet always gets the ride to the range. Probably wouldn't notice for a while if some of the SQs disappeared.

Few good buddies trumps many acquaintances.
