Hi, long term lurker here finally getting first rifle. Always wanted a long range precision rifle. Probably looking to shoot at 200-300m first at the local ranges, then going farther and farther to preferably 1000 yard. There just so many choices especially with scopes as well, making me make this thread. I prefer to get a trusty Rem 700 but even then there's so many variants. I at first had my eyes set on a 5R but it seems prices have increased to $1700ish. That doesn't leave much for a decent optics. Can any of you fine folks direct me to an awesome setup and where to go. I do prefer local shops but if a price is unbeatable elsewhere I can take a look. I am also thinking of adding a MDT chassis in the future. Thanks!

Theres a nice Sako A7 with a vortex on the EE now for $2000 in 300 win mag. Decent saving for what looks like almost new.
If not, theres always like new 700s coming up in 308 and 223 often on the EE.
I would buy used like Shooter says and buy a new optic.

There are always good buys on 5R's on EE - i would look at that, and buy a SIII and you're set and on budget.
There are many good deals on EE - be patient but be ready to buy when one comes up!

Used Sako 75 Varmint with Sightron SIII would my choice.
There is also a Tikka M55 sporter in .243 on the EE as we speak.

I'm not a big fan of the Rem 700 but the 5R is not a bad choice.
You can find a used one for fair price.

The 700 LTR is also not bad.

If you want a 5r, you can find one used in the 1000-1200 range usually with timney trigger already installed.
That was my first long range rig, really enjoyed it as it was quite accurate.

My opinion: you can't mess around with the optic. Buy a good scope (around 1000$-1200$) then choose a rifle that you like for the budget left. Particulary in long range, you better have the best optic you can afford.
A cheap rifle with a bull barrel will give you very good results if you spend time on it. You will HAVE to reload, it's the begining of precision improvements... And the cool part is that it's fun! ;)

If you are good with your hands and your Tools you will be able to bed the action of your rifle, and do some little mods that will improve your accuracy. Later on you'll be able to change the stock, trigger or even the barrel so you'll continue to improve and learn.

It take some time, lots of rounds and trials to build experience, and that's what makes the good shooters. At first, the rifle will probably shoot better than you so buying a super costy rig won't tighten your groups...

I recommand also to not choose a big caliber to avoid bad flinching habits.

Yeah I heard from a few friends that savage 10 are actually better quality and shoot more accurate than 700s. I'm glad you enjoy yours. Can you provide anymore feedback or insight into your setup? Thanks! :D

Savage or maybe a remington 783 in 223rem with a good scope. You can get a handle on all the fundamentals and its cheaper to shoot with minimal recoil. Check out 6.5 guys 223 trainer. With the left over money get into reloading. Mystic Precision has good info on reloading.

More quality... I'm not sure.

More accurate... Well an average Savage 10 is more accurate than the average Rem 700.

Savage is hard to beat on the price vs accuracy ratio but they have to cut somewhere to stay with low prices.

While I'm not a fan of Remington, I must say the overall build quality of the 700's is pretty good for the price.

But hey, that's just my opinion !
