Elk/Deer Combo Gun

Waiting on the .270 haters to chime in saying it is entire incapable for elk.

It isn't, mind you. I load 130gr. GMX monolithics.

If your deciding between 7x57 or 7RM. Then 7RM no contest. But I would seriously consider a 7-08 over your two choice's.

How on earth do you figure that... 1/2" for a short action??? If 7 RM is the sure bet over 7X57 it is also the sure bet over 7-08.

For inside 200 yards why not go bigger and slower? 9.3x57. 358 win. 35 rem. 338 federal. Or even 444 or 450 marlin. Lighter faster bullets damage a lot more meat than heavier slower cup and core bullets. They kill extremely well

Both will work. I'd go with the 7x57 just because its different from the typical go to calibers most people are carrying. Variety is the spice of life.

A slower midbore is not really something I had thought of but it may fit the bill.

Or load 225 grain bullets in the .338 but that seems like way overkill for the whitetails.

^ out of the price range and presents the same issues as the .338.

I was also planning on putting a scope on this one.

If you reload I'd go 7mm Rem Mag because you can load it down to 7x57 ballistics if you want but you can't load a 7x57 to 7mm Rem Mag ballistics, seems a no brainer.

Nothing wrong with a 7X57 as it has more than enough punch for big animals. Not 100% sure, but I believe that was Karamojo Bell's "go-to" gun for African game, including elephant. I have a preference for its parent 8mm.

But, between the two options, I would go with the 7mmRemMag just for the ease of buying ammo off the shelf.

That was the guy.

Bell was of a different skin color so not shot. Basically a ivory poacher. He would body shoot a bunch of elephants each day....double back and get the ivory from the ones he shot three days ago.....no need to track...just go to where the vultures where circling.

I have been looking on a lot of South African and safari oriented sights and some impressive stuff has been dropped by the 7x57 in modern times; kudus, elands other antelopes I've never heard of that look elk sized.

Could always have one guy carrying an elk gun and one a deer gun.

I'd go for a 7mm Rem Mag.

Load it down a bit for deer and choose a slightly lighter bullet.

Load it hotter for elk with a tougher/heavier bullet.

I wouldn't do any of that messing around. Work up a load and shoot everything with said load. Get to know exactly how it preforms at all distances instead of messing with everything for different animals.

Also the gun is for mixed bag hunting, encountering both species is likely and both tags are available over the counter. Maybe I will play with 200-225's in the .338 wm.

I was thinking of something in the 150 grain area in the 7mm mag or 175 grain woodleighs in the 7x57.

Now you're coming around!..... Lol...

Seriously, I have a 7-08 and a .338....... If it was an elk hunt with a chance of deer it would be the .338..... If it was a deer hunt with a chance of elk it would be the 7-08 ......

I have a bunch of 200 grain hornadies loaded up; I could use them for practice and swap in a premium 210 grain bullet if the POI checks out.

Both species are encountered equally in this area.
