Looking for opinions on my Moose rifle choice..

Hello. In my last Moose hunt I employed my Savage AXIS scoped 30-06 scoped rifle. With a possible 300 yard view, the rifle & cartridge is acceptable.
The new hunt is brush & trees, no long shots. Plus I was advised that a scoped rifle might not be an advantage. Lever guns & short distances in brush & trees is the norm. 100 yard shots are a stretch, open sights an advantage. Closer shots.

This is what I can deploy:
Option 1. Savage Axis, scoped in 30-06.
Option 2. M305, M14 clone in .308, open sights.
Option 3. H&R Handi-Rifle single shot rifle using factory .44mag 240g XTP's
Option 4. H&R Handi-Rifle single shot smooth bored shotgun with rifled slugs

I don't particularly want to buy a new gun/caliber as I think one of the above might work. Perhaps two choices with one as a backup.
Weight is a consideration but not a deal breaker. Looking for sage advice.....thanks...
 
The 3006 is the obvious choice, but I don't doubt the 44 would do the job as well. If a 30-30 can topple a moose, a 44 will do the same.
 
A 3-9x40 scope is much too large for your application IMOP....... When you see a moose at 30 yards on 3x magnification and see nothing but hair as you frantically try to find it's "armpit" as a point of reference you will be ready to smack your rifle against a tree.....

Get a scope with lower magnification for your aught 6 and you will be fine..... 1.5 - whatever, or even 2-7......
 
I think your 30-06 would do the job. If you're really strapped for cash pick up a shotgun 1-4 or 1.5-4 scope and you should be good. If you've got more to spend then get a better scope like the one listed above. Good luck on your hunt.
 
Put your scope on low power and learn to use it with both eyes open. I've killed way too many animals a few steps away to believe that a scope is a "handicap" in this sort of hunting conditions.

What Gatehouse said, I hunted for quite a while with various rifles with a 3x9x40 Conquest scope set on 6 most of the time. I came up on animals with both eyes open and only closed my off eye at the last second and never had any trouble.
 
Another vote for the .30-06. :cool:
