Bit of a delay getting this up but long story short saw 13 bears in 10 days with every mature boar (5) seen except one badly rubbed and the one who was not we could not catch up to. The other hunter the outfitter had out that stretch killed a legit 9' bear on the last day. Apparently the warm winter resulted in a lot of bears this spring on Kodiak being rubbed way earlier than usual.

Weather was at times horrific and for the most part bad with about 2 days total time spent in weather I would consider "good" lol.

Outfitter was great, guide was superb....put out a massive effort but came back empty handed. Will go again next spring and will try to draw a tag but failing that will again hunt the registration area speaking of which I will say we travelled and were dropped off by Razr vehicles about 30k from the end of the "trail". We saw nobody, had a good camp and saw a lot of bears. The one the other hunter took also came from the registration area. I did not feel the least bit handicapped hunting that unit as far back as we were.

Saw a lot of goats, literally hundreds of deer (or so it seemed) and even some wild horses that were roaming around. The country is not particularly high elevation wise but is very rugged.

Per a previous thread I will note the Sitka rain gear I had worked well. No complaints there and it literally poured rain for 7 of the 10 days we hunted...Lots of pics I will get posted of the terrain, weather and the wildlife...

I've wondered for quite some time if the genetics on Kodiak had suffered due to the hunting pressure there, but the bear taken by the other camp seems to have answered that question. That was a wonderful adventure, you had, thanks for posting.

In line with Boomer's comment: I read in a newspaper that Arctic grizzlies are mating with Polar bears and producing grolars and pizzlies.

Anybody seeing these animals and how are they functioning?

Thanks for sharing Ross. I'm planning a similar hunt next year but have never been to Kodiak. Do you have any "lessons learned" in terms of packing, items you wish you'd brought/left behind? That sort of thing. Any and all words of wisdom are appreciated.

There are lots of "Grolars" on Banks Island according to a friend who is a hunting guide. Apparently they are more common on the North end of the island where there is almost no hunting pressure.
