My refinished 1935 Tula Mosin Nagant

Looking good.

Strip, stain, shellac or did you do a bunch of coats of Tung Oil?

I've been looking for a blonde Mosin to work on...

Thats looks great. I am refinishing a 52 sks tula right now and I recently did a 20ish .22 jga.And I have been looking at buying a mosin, now I am lol...I love these old rifles thanks for showing us.

I stripped it down to bare wood by sanding with 60 grit on my orbital sander and then by hand for the finer parts , i finish sanded with 220 grit Norton sandpaper again using the orbital sander then finishing up by hand . the wood was a bright white colour once i was done sanding . i used Varathane Gel Stain (3 coats)colour(Cabernet) applied with a cheap dollar store foam brush . Then for a protective finish i used Varathane Polyurethane Semi Gloss (Oil Based) 5 coats applied with another cheap foam brush sanding off the rough spots with 220 grit Norton sandpaper by hand . After the second clear coat i noticed that the forestock wasn't quite as red as the rest of the stock so i mixed a little of the stain with some clear coat and appled that and it workrd great , then i covered the stock with two more coats of polyurethane sanding where necessary. I painted the barrel retainers and the sling holes with gloss black tremclad paint before begining the clear coat process.

Very nice looking rifle. Glad Bubba never showed his ugly face. How does it shoot for you?

I am limited to about 100 meters or so with my eyesight and as far as i can tell it will hit wherever you point it at that distance , i have never touched the sites just cleaned it loaded some Norinco 7.62x54r

I have the Varathane Cabernet in liquid oil based stain, never used the gel stain before. I have tons of stain around, not going to try any until my other stuff is gone. You did a good job on the poly as many times it comes out too shiny... The gloss black tremclad seems to match the bluing as well. Very well done.

Did they use Beech stocks on these?

Yeah the Gel stain i used is oil based and its great, it makes no mess , it goes on like thick coloured grease no drips or runs , I bought the tiny 236 ml bottle and even after 3 coats of stain there is still 80% of the stain still left , as for the poly , the Varathane brand polyurethane seems to be not as shiny as the Minwax poly i have used before and it was a Semi-Gloss not Gloss , so maybe that was the difference . I used the Gloss black tremclad only because i had a can of it on hand , it was a spray can , i just sprayed a little into the cap and applied it with a tiny arts and crafts brush . As for the stocks from what i have read they are supposed to be Beech but when i did the sanding the wood seemed very soft , maybe that was just the age not sure but it was a very light colour after all of the old varnish was stripped , i will see if i can find a picture of when i had it striped.

you're doing OK. I hunt with a similar Mosin in thick bush and open sights. Average shot of 75 meters, long range out to 150. It works great. If you ever reload, everything Mosin works better with a .312 bullet ( pre-slugged of course).

Good to know Thanx
