How many km's from a dump would you guys feel comfortable setting up your bear bait? I have a dump 1 km south on the east side of the hwy and I'm looking at baiting 6kms or so north west back in the bush of the dump on the other side of the hwy. Is that far enough away to not get a dump bear?

Bears can travel 30 to 50km. That is close to a dump.

Probably yes. Dump bears seem to hang around the dump. They are lazy and won't wander far from a reliable food source.

Just talking with my hunting pal that lives there, turns out they filled in the land fill 2 or 3 years ago and now it is just a dump station and everything is in big dumpsters.

That's a major reason why I don't eat bears.

The one in West Van last week was into powerbars left in the car outside.
They cant be all that bad eating so close to hoity toity West Vancouver, now can they?
go a little further afeild and set up your blind and maybe something to consider is what your bait of choice is going to be and the bait choice of others.
Might not be far off from what the dump has to offer now can it?
Tight Groups and pics when the deed is done,
Rob

I am currently living on a rural property with a ravine and stream running through it. Asked my landlords as the hyway seems to have a bunch of Bear crossings parellel to that stream. Actually there is a big sewage lagoon that bears go feed at about 2km from my place.

How many km from the sewage lagoon is ok to shoot a bear for table fare.....owwwe yummy.

Bear needs to be properly cooked, particularly fall bear. If done right, it is excellent.

How far from a dump? It's illegal to hunt bear within a KM in Ontario.

As previously stated, they likely all visit dumps at some point. Get over it.

Deer will eat dead carcasses too. Does that throw you off venison?

I have eaten a bear that almost fed exclusively on cranberries. It was excellent. I think a lot of the problem with the taste of bears stems from hunters not removing all the fat properly. With the distance from a dump, the ONT rules say you can not harvest a bear within 400M of a dump.

I heard somewhere that dirty diapers are a bear delicacy at the dump. Sounds like they are now modernizing like us and moving to prepackaged meals.

I take one now and again for meat always a fall bear and a small bear.i mix it in with my hamburger meat instead of pork and also in my sausage and pepperoni.i could never get my kids to try it they didn't like it,probably let them watch to many cartoons with Yogee and Boo-boo growing up.i wonder a what point a dump bear becomes a meat bear when they get on the apples berries and corn in the fall.
