I am waiting for my PAL to arrive and now I am in search of a rifle I can use on 200-400meter range(if it can do more, that would be nice too, for the future), along with a scope. Budget, as low as possible. I don't know what a setup would cost, but if there's a way to do all that under $1000-1500, that would be amazing.
Any suggestions would be be appreciated.

I'd look for a used rifle. I have owned two of the older Remington Varmint Synthetic rifles and they came in at around your budget. One in .223 and one in .308. I think I paid $1200 for the .223 which included a Leopold 36x benchrest scope. They come with H.S. Precision stocks which is a plus. Both rifles are quite accurate for the money. The .223" would hold about 0.6 moa at 200m and the .308 about 0.75 moa at 200 for five shot groups.

Chris.

I would be looking at a Tikka Varmint Stainless in 223rem,on sale now that the new versions are on the way. Add a Nikon Monarch 5-20x44 scope, either on sale, or used, and you should be close to $1500. A heavy barreled Vanguard in 223rem with the same scope will come in at well under $1500.

Thank you for the suggestions guys. What would be an appx cost of ammo for those per 500 or 1000? That may help as well if I can save a bit on that.

It's been mentioned already, but consider starting with a .223 bolt gun. I'm in a similar position as you, and have been steered this direction. Cheaper to shoot, practice good habits & fundedmentals, and may help you learn the wind quicker.

Tikka T3 in 223Rem would do nicely. With low recoil don't need an expensive scope that can handle 300WM or even 308Win recoil.

^^^^ This is good advice everything in 223 perhaps Savage to start

Another for the Tikka T3 varmint.I have really been enjoying mine.I love the caliber cheap too shoot and almost no recoil.Pop cans at 300-350 yds effortless.I need a longer range already.
I'm not into hand loading so have been using factory ammo which can vary widley.

Before you buy a large amount of ammo it would be wise to try a few different brands to see what the gun likes. The results can vary widely.

Thats a nice setup, if you can hit a pop can at those distances you seem to have it dialed in quite well.

As others have said, a .223 in a Savage or Tikka T3.

The Bushnell Elite 10x40 mildot is an excellent entry-level precision scope.

Thanks for the compliments. It took a little while to find ammo that was consistent .Having a fellow shooter my buddy Weatherby wanderer to call shots helps a lot. I'm also very comfortable with the target turrets on my PST. I also do a lot of 50yd precision br with my anschutz 22lr.

Some Savage 10 model with a heavy barrel 1-7 or 1-9 twist in .223, Tasco 6-24x44 AO Varmint with a mildot reticle for a whopping $129, Timney trigger $100, a Lee classic loader ($50-$60 these days?) with some reloading components(1lbs Varget/H322/H335/benchmark and some 69gr SMK's) and 'hammer out' some rounds to find out what it likes to shoot... should be an easy 300-400 yard pop can blaster with custom made ammo for around $1000!

upgrade each piece (benchrest stock, better scope, custom barrel etc) as you can afford or as it comes up for sale on the EE and sell off the old to re-coupe some cash for more reloads.

Mossberg is putting out it's MVP in .223 that takes AR magazines and some models come fitted with the excellent MDT-LC LSS chassis for $ 1479.99 or the laminate wood model for $ 679.00 from Cabellas. These have proven to shoot pretty well and the addition of the 10 rnd AR pistol mag makes it a pretty good deal.

I just met someone who said I should get something that was designed for precision and long range shooting and that would ensure I won't have to buy a new gun in 2-3 years. That person recommended Mossberg MVP LC (.223) or better Ruger Precision Rifle ( in 308).
Is that true?
Both are a bit out of my budget, but perhaps I can get a used one?
