I have a 308 and looking for a Scope, I have never bought one and have no idea what too look for. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. i have a savage 10FCP McMillan. want something that looks cool and still does it's job. Also is there anything i can get for about 1500? or am i looking at more money?

Is vortex any good?

Some LOVE Vortex, some do not. I have a 4x16x44 Viper HSLR SFP on my Springfield M1a that has stood up great and they are known for being tough on scopes. So good, that on my Savage 10 TR in 308, I mounted a 6x24x50 Viper PST FFP and love that one as well. That said I have met a few fellows who have not had the same kind of luck with Vortex products. I think my next scope will be a FFP Sightron, as the one on my buddies gin is a beauty. Figure why not try :)

I've had a Vortex PST 6-24x50 and was very happy with it. Fits your price range. Heard good things about Sightron but never looked through one. Upgraded to a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56, it's not night and day with the Vortex but there's definitely a difference. Let's just say that with the Nightforce, I don't a spotting scope to see groups at 300 meters. One of the major advantages of the Vortex is the light weight. 23.4 ounces for the PST vs 32 for the Nightforce. The 6-24x50 Sightron is 24.3 ounces.

Bushnell Elite Tactical ERS 3.5-21x50mm

This! Great track record by a tough group of users (PRS competitors), good mag range, decent glass, very useful reticle.

It may be a bit more than $1,500 but keep an eye on the EE. You could also go with the DMR which is pretty much the same but less mils per turn.

Having owned a bunch of high quality scopes, I can say without a doubt that if I had your budget constraints, the above scope is the way to go. Heck, if I had to shop for another scope and had a $4k budget, I would still buy this scope. I love my S&B PMII, but the Bushy can do everything the more expensive scopes can.

Sightron S3 8-32x56 or 10-50x60. I have one of each. 10-50x60 will focus closer for indoor .22lr and such and quite a few use them for F-class, my 8-32x56 lives on my FTR.

I want to add my vote for the Bushnell Tactical Elite. I have a 6x24 MOA and side by side with my buddies Sightron the Bushnell was way brighter and much sharper. I bought my used from the EE so be patient and keep you eyes open for a deal.

I have a Sightron 10-50x with custom .25 turrets and a Nightforce BR 12-42 and both are comparable, although I like the Sightron better - it's half the price and in your price range. Mystic Precision can set you up.

Thanks I will do some research on this one, and some of the others listed.

Can I ask if or how much of a difference did you notice between the vortex and sightron?

Minimal difference - edge going to Sightron with MY eyes, plus the MOA 2 reticle with dot was more to my liking. However, i switched because i had two warranty issues back-to-back with the Vipers, and down time really doesn't sit well with me. Warranty did resolve tho.
