I couldn't find anything about these in the first few pages; apologies if this has been asked before, I'm new to it all.
What do M&P owners think of them? Which calibre is recommended?
Just found some good sale prices and thinking about the 9mm range kit version. It would be my first hand gun and the idea behind that is it would be the same 9mm Luger calibre (I think!) as the Beretta CX4 Storm that I am also thinking of getting. Ideally it would be good to try one first, easier said than done.

It's a great handgun, very popular and excellent value with the range kit. You're right about it sharing ammo with the CX4. I think the pistols are most often bought in 9 or .40, but they are a great choice in any caliber. In your particular case since it's your first handgun the 9mm seems like the best option due to ease of shooting and low price of ammo in comparison to the other available calibers.

Thanks, your comment on cost and ease of shooting are spot on and part of my reasoning too. I tried a few things out on the weekend; unfortunately not the M&P but some other 9mm that felt manageable but none of them really grabbed me. I had ideas about a classic 45ACP 1911 but tried one and it was a real handful which brought me back to 9mm. There is 22LR of course, but I think I would go for something a bit more than that and so with the CX4 in mind...

I didn't like my M&P , found it lacked in accuracy and had a terrible trigger. I just got a CZ shadow off the EE. It's much more accurate and a keeper for sure. You can pick up a lightly used CZ for $800, a big improvement over the M&P 9, in my opinion.

For the price, its a great setup. I love mine. If you want to spend a few hundred more, i would highly recommend a CZ though.

I quite like th m&p but you may want the apex trigger in it. The pro is a sweet setup, but you can drop an apex trigger in the range kit and have a sweet rig. Happy shopping.

I've owned a .40 for a number of years and really like it. Accurate, reliable and super-comfortable to shoot even in .40. I've not found anything wrong with the factory trigger myself.

I have three M&P's. The M&P 9, Pro Series CORE 5", and an M&P 22. All are accurate reliable pistols. The older 9's had accuracy issues. The newer ones have a different twist in the barrel that fixed this. Now accuracy is very good. You will hear a lot of complaints about the triggers. They are a typical trigger from a striker fired duty pistol. Everybody compares the trigger to that of a hammer fired single action pistol, which I think is ridiculous. But for what it is the triggers are okay, not great. If you want a better trigger, Apex makes excellent enhancement kits. In my M&P 9 I have the Apex competition enhancement kit which makes for a very nice trigger. In my Pro Series I have the Apex forward set sear and aluminum trigger kit, which makes for an incredible trigger.

My advice would be to go to a range that rents them or find someone that owns one and will let you try it. That will let you see if it is comfortable for you, which is very important, and you can see what the triggers are like. If you like it and decide to buy one, 9mm will give you less recoil than 40 and will be cheaper to shoot as well.

Over all the M&P's are great pistols.

You said you are new to this so I feel its only fair to warn you........ Pistols are like Lays potato chips, you can't have just one. :)

I've put 55,000+ rounds through a plain jane M&P9 - it's reliable, as accurate as I am and very durable. No issues that weren't the fault of the ammo (or the guy reloading it). No worries. You'll need a new recoil spring around 5-7000 rounds, mag springs and followers around 10K. You can do trigger job yourself, or put Apex parts in it. I find it more comfortable than a Glock and equally reliable.

i started with a Ruger P89 in 9mm years and years ago.
went up to a Glock 17, never liked the feel of it in my hands, shoots fine, super reliable but just dont like the feel of it.
then the M&P came out and i fell in love with the way they feel in my hand.
picked one up, love the way it shoots.
liked it so much that over the years i seem to keep adding more and more of them to my stable.
myself ive never had a problem with the stock triggers, all mine run them.

just be careful.... you may end up with a bunch of them like me!
the 9mm Range Kit is a gateway drug to the addiction!!!

I have the M&P 9, a Glock 17, and a CZ SP01 Shadowline. The Glock and CZ are the better handgun in my view, at least they work far better for me. The CZ is excellent right out of the box, the Glock took a few mods to get it very nice. i always take my Glock and CZ to the range, never take the M&P.

Thanks all, really useful information. Sounds like most people like them but not all. What I might do is buy a box of ammo and hang around the range to see if I can get a go of one and maybe some others to compare.

I would have to agree for the ones I have used...

If you just want a good gun, and have no particular specific need for a plastic fantastic, the CZ Shadow, as mentioned, is in every way superior other than weighing more.

As far as I'm concerned it's the 9mm against which all others are measured. Other than a Hi Power I have for the sake of having a Hi Power, it's the only 9mm I have left, and the last one that I want.

I love my M&P 9. It has seen thousands of rounds and never had a failure except the 1 case i folded over and wouldn't feed. The trigger kind of sucks but its not horrible. I would definatly buy another.

what range are you going to?
I usually hit up Silverdale Friday mornings (10am) if that's any good for you...and ya I've got the "kit9" version
you're welcome to send a few thru it

and I've got a ruger 22/45 target as well if you're interested in having a go at the 22lr :)

Try to find a m&p9 pro with the 5 inch slide and fibre optic front sight. Trigger is a bit better than the regular ones. I will also suggest a cz sp01 shadow if you want to spend a little more.
