Stopping a charging bear.

Wouldn't you?..... Hell, we hear all about each time one of your lefty options don't work out ..... If your fishing party got attacked and you fended off the bear, saved yourself and two others, and use a 9mm, I would expect a novel from you........ Complete within pic of you standing over the bear with a scowl on your face........

Huh?

It actually was the fire as well. Just a different thread. Here is what he said.

"I have used bear spray on a number of occasions and do recommended it -- but in this situation, where the bear came at a full charge through the brush and only appeared when he was within 6 feet of me and was between me and the clients within a very tight space, I am not so sure how effective bear spray would have been.

I admit it probably would have been better than than nothing"

So, where is the mystery? .......

I had to laugh when I saw he was using a 3953. It's what we refer to as the baby gun or the girl gun.

I only know one person that winningly carries that every day and despite my best efforts, I can't convince them to change. Reason is for plainclothes VIP work but as an everyday carry gun with everyone else using the 5946 I hate it. If you get in the weeds and need a mag you're hooped.

???

Sounds to me like he did just fine...... Except for the shot in the foot thing.... But under that kind of heat, a lot can happen in the heat of the moment.......

Re-read the entire article and couldn't find any mention of anyone or anything being shot in the foot. You're confusing Phil with the 10mm guy from another thread.

For the sake of discussion, the idea that pepper spray does not compromise the lethal option, is flawed. Certainly a person's response time must be considered, as must the range he is from the threat. But pepper spray is most effective when employed from a range of about 10'. If it doesn't work, how do you have time to bring lethal force to the discussion?

If the pepper spray is your primary weapon, and doesn't work, then why hasn't it woked? Perhaps the can was faulty and doesn't spray. But if the reason is because the wind has blown it back on you, you might be incapacitated, and be unable to effectively defend yourself or anyone else with the secondary weapon you have to draw, point, and fire. If the spray pattern is disrupted by vegetation, then you are unlikely to have time to make a lethal response. The fact is that to effectively respond to a lethal attack, you must program yourself to respond in a certain way. At the moment of truth, if you have a moment's hesitation whether to choose spray or gun, you've lost the initiative.

Excellent comment. Another excellent comment was from gatehouse, who stated that even when pepper spray works, it just stops or delays the bear advance for a short moment. You spray again, delay the the bear advance again. Until you use up all the spray, you are doomed.
This is an IQ topic. Darwinism will cull these with lower IQ

In Canada, if one used any sort of pistol to defend against anything, he couldn't tell anyone about it.

Isn't is against the basic human right that the government forbid it citizens from carrying handguns for self protection?

I doubt if thats got anything to do with a basic human right, at least I wouldn't want to try arguing that in a court of law considering the current ant-gun feelings of our lawmakers.
However, it should be shouldn't it ?
When somebody breaks into my home at night I should be allowed to use any necessary protection regardless.

People that think pepper spray is a real option, from a pissed off alpha predator at 2 yards, must be the same folks critical for police not shooting guns out of perps hands. Walk up a salmon stream with 10ft visibility, stepping over bear scat the size of microwaves....bears head is the size of a cooler, body the size of a SXS fridge. Spray is the solution sometimes, this is not one of them.

This pretty much covers it .

So why wander up a salmon stream in crap conditions during bear pig-out season. Kinda sounds like baiting, with the human bein' the bait.;)

A cool head and a lot of luck the bear wasn't to determined. 6 shots before it even turned, that's not exactly stopping a bear. I wonder what would have transpired had the couple not fallen into the deep grass and been standing visible to the bear while soaking up lead. Sounds like they picked the right guy to go with and were extremely lucky.

Because people like salmon, hunting, berry picking, hiking, camping, photography or whatever floats your boat , and most aren't as afraid as the vast majority of CGN'rs. Most wouldn't even be able to go to the garbage dump in Mackenzie FFS. There's more bears in northern BC than people. If outdoorsy people thought like most on here do about bears, there wouldn't be a soul out in the bush around here.
