When deciding on what matches that you would be willing to travel 4, 5, or 8 hours drive away, what are the key deciding factors that would convince you to go?

Boils down to interest in event. If it doesn't look good I won't drive anywhere.

I've only done Southern Alberta, but we use to do the round sof Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

I'm considering WRAS's PRS match simply because they are good guys, will put on a good event, and at a range I wouldn't mind experiencing. Thats 500km away I think.

I'd need it to be at least a two day match and I'd need to have reliable info on the expected quality of the match, either from someone I know or pics and vids.

From Edmonton right now its a bit difficult, CHAS is great and I go to that at about 45 minutes, and managed to make it to G.P. at about 4.5 hours one way because it was a 2 day, Peace River 2 day is about 5 hours one way which is the next one I'm travelling farther distance for.
4-5 hours each way makes a long day for a one day match and haven't done that yet but its in discussions since a shooting buddy has a VW diesel that can make the drive much cheaper.

Thanks for the replies.

So it looks like a solid 2 day match is a basic requirement to draw people in from 4 - 8 hours away.

What factor would the following play?

- on site camping
- prize table
- round count
- number of competitors
- interesting reactive targets

Great stages.
Lunch at the very least. Water or decent access to buy liquids a must.
Decent facilities so we're not taking a dump in a bush somewhere.
For out of towners: deal on accommodations at reasonable distance.

- on site camping Necessary.
- prize table Nice, but not relevant for me.
- round count At least 125-150 per day.
- number of competitors Doesn't really matter.
- interesting reactive targets Doesn't matter.

Seeing stage videos online that make me scratch my head or are full of weird range rules and contrived activities or that show well thought out and fun stages will have a greater effect on my desire to attend a match than anything else.

I'd think prize tables would be necessary. That is assuming you go to your share of local matches and by traveling you are looking to shine. But that's just me.

To me... The limiting factor is rifle ammo.... And entry costs. If there was 3gun matches where I could use dirty steel core ammo, it would definitely catch my interest. The way it is now, I'm using somewhat hard to come by 40cent a shot .223, which the price really starts to add up after each match. Entry cost is another thing... I have no problem paying 20-40$ to enter a match, but have to pay like 100$ plus 40$ to enter say something like a CHAS match is too much for me to want to drive 3+ hrs

Unfortunately, it's not a cheap sport. Ammo is just a small part of it.

I was a tank and a half of diesel on the weekend to drag the trailer to GP, $120 entry fee (included 4 meals and great prize table) plus two days worth of ammo, and never mind the rum drank around the fire Friday and Saturday night.

The difference between 20 cent and 40 cent ammo is pretty small in the grand scheme of things.

Edit: FWIW, Warren, all 4 MP3G clubs permit steel-core/cased/jacketed ammo, with the exception of AP and M855 5.56.

Wow, that's a long ways.... But hey, at least they're out there. I'd agree with stevo too that camping is a must for 4hr+ drives, the time one would have to wake up in Calgary, to attend a 3gun in Northern AB is not natural. Haha

There is some great info here.
The main purpose behind this thread is to hear from competitors who are willing to travel to a 3 gun match and why they go to certain matches.

Lakeland 3 Gun (Bonnyville & Cold Lake) is working hard to be a match choice for those competitors and, really appreciate your input.

Both clubs here are invested in 3 gun and want to see it succeed.

Please keep comments coming as we wish to hold one major match per season that YOU wouldn't want to miss. (plus our regular monthly club match)

Pick a theme or style to make your major match different. For example, this October we're having the 4th annual two day team match in PR. We draw from as far away as Calgary and Wainwright, though the vast majority come from the Peace Country. Rumour has it some of the flatlanders are going to try and make it up this year.
