I have the itch for a 12ga SxS just to use at clays when I'm feeling anachronistic.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm an enthusiastic, yet casual shooter. I don't compete, I don't hunt, I don't have kids to pass an heirloom grade gun down to, so I'd like to cap my budget around $1500, preferring to hit under that.

I'm not choosy about barrel length, be it a 20" coach gun or a 28" field gun.

But If it's a newly made gun, it MUST use choke tubes.

OR

Something good, yet reasonable enough in a fixed choke gun where I could conceivably buy 2 for my budget - an open choked one for 5 stand and skeet and a full one for trap.

Are the Boito/Stoeger guns Good Enough?

How about CZ?

The BSS looks like a tank, but they are up there in price for a fixed choke gun.

I can't find much on those Daudson ones Prophet River sells..

Cimarron has some nice stuff, but no info as to choke setup or country of origin.

Tradex always has a pile of old guns, but I'm afraid of parts breakage/finding parts.

...?

Just make sure if it's an older gun that it's chambered for 2 3/4".

A lot of old sxs are 2.5" Chambers.

I think the beretta is a wee bit spendy for me. A guy at the range had a pretty little Rizzini. Likewise out of reach.

When did 2.5" chambers go out of style?

Well, they didn't. They're still made in England. North American makers seem to have settled on 2 3/4", so finding 2 1/2" shells can be a little tricky. They tend to be a specialty item that you won't find in many gunstores, and definitely not Cdn. Tire.

I'd recommend 28" barrels minimum. You won't be able to be too picky if you're buying used, but longer barrels tend to be more forgiving for wingshooting, whether clays or feathers.

I was just over to the Accuracy Plus website (Peterborough ON), and they have a Midland boxlock listed for $900. Only one photo, but looks like it might be a decent gun.

We sell 2.5" (and 2") in RST brand...

The yildiz SxS are going to be out of my budget...

Can't find any info on the Daudsons as to how they are choked. I'll email once I've actually got money to spend

I thought they looked pretty picked over last I checked..

What about the Akkar Churchill 512?

I'm just kicking the ball right now. This is nothing I'm going to jump on until I find the right one and find it on sale.
I'd just like to narrow the focus of research.

I have been using a Boito for years as my goto cowboy shotgun and have a few others as a result. They are a tank, but far from pretty. They have never failed me, whereas the Stoegers have had a couple of minor glitches.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but PR now stocks RST? How did I not hear about that? I stopped in there a few weeks ago while passing through on vacation and could have picked some up. Do you carry the short 10s as well? What do you carry for non tox? OP, sorry for going off topic.

Well - You don't hunt. So what type of target shooting do you do? Skeet requires an open choke, trap requires a full or modified choke. If you don't need the removable chokes, then a nice fixed choke gun like the BSS would ensure your heirloom purchase, and likely increase in value.
